The Romesh Chandra Peace Prize was awarded to Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Mr. Uong Chu Luu and Mr. Tran Dac Loi, former Deputy Standing Committee of the Party Central Committee's External Relations Commission, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Peace Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation (now the Vietnam Peace and Development Council). At the ceremony in Hanoi, the prize was awarded to Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh and Mr. Uong Chu Luu; the award ceremony for Mr. Tran Dac Loi will be held at an appropriate time.
The ceremony was attended by leaders of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , departments, ministries, and branches, and AIPSO delegates.

According to the Resolution announced at the AIPSO Congress held from August 16-18, 2024 in New Delhi (India), AIPSO resolved to establish the Romesh Chandra Peace Prize to honor Mr. Romesh Chandra, an outstanding Indian activist and one of the great symbols of the world peace movement. Mr. Romesh Chandra is also a loyal friend, always standing side by side with the Vietnamese people, actively mobilizing progressive movements and peace-loving forces around the world to support the struggle for independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people. The award also honors individuals and organizations with outstanding contributions to promoting peace, strengthening international solidarity, recognizing the dedication and efforts of peace activists, inspiring future generations to continue to contribute, spreading the values of peace, independence, freedom and friendship among nations. |
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Pallab Sengupta, Secretary of the National Council of the Communist Party of India and Chairman of the World Peace Council, highly appreciated the contributions of Vietnamese individuals to the international peace and solidarity movement, and honored the role of individuals in fostering friendly relations between the Vietnamese people and other nations.
Mr. Pallab Sengupta expressed his honor to present the Romesh Chandra Peace Prize to Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, one of the most inspiring figures in the world for peace, independence and social justice. He emphasized that Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh shines in the history of Vietnam's heroic struggle, as the main negotiator of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam at the Paris Conference, bravely and with dignity standing before the world, speaking up not only for the aspirations of the Vietnamese people but also for all those who fought against imperialism and for peace.
After reunification, she continued to serve her country as Minister of Education, Vice President, promoting reconciliation, social progress and international friendship. Her lifelong commitment to peace, national independence, education and women’s emancipation embodied the ideals that Romesh Chandra, Honorary President of the World Peace Council, pursued throughout his life. Mr. Pallab Sengupta stressed that the honoring of her today is an occasion to affirm the strong friendship between the people of Vietnam and India, forged by common struggles and strengthened by mutual respect.

Mr. Pallab Sengupta also highly appreciated Mr. Uong Chu Luu's contributions to the cause of promoting the ideals of independence, equality and social progress that President Ho Chi Minh upheld. As Chairman of the Vietnam Peace Committee, Mr. Uong Chu Luu contributed to raising the voice of Vietnam in the international peace and friendship movement, contributing to building the international peace and solidarity movement, and strengthening the historical relationship between the people of Vietnam and India as well as between peoples around the world who share the same aspiration for a just and peaceful world. The Romesh Chandra Peace Prize recognizes Mr. Uong Chu Luu's personal contribution and honors the collective efforts of the Vietnamese people in building a just and peaceful world order, based on equality and mutual respect.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh expressed her honor to receive the award named after a great political activist of India and the world. She said that she had the opportunity to work with Mr. Romesh Chandra in the framework of international activities. Under his leadership, the World Peace Council became the core of the movement against imperialism, for peace and national independence, and actively supported the struggle of the Vietnamese people, contributing to the victory of the Vietnamese revolution.
On this occasion, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh expressed her gratitude to the Government, the Communist Party of India and the people of India. She recalled her profound memories of her visit to India in 1971, when the tense Paris negotiations were taking place and the war in South Vietnam was fierce. She was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, despite objections from the Saigon government's consulate, demonstrating India's independent stance and respect for sovereignty in its foreign policy. She emotionally recalled the words of her friends who supported Vietnam: "You are Vietnam, I am Vietnam, we are Vietnam", expressing her wish for the friendship between the two countries to become increasingly strong for peace and common interests.

Mr. Uong Chu Luu sent his thanks to AIPSO, along with domestic and international colleagues and friends, including the World Peace Council and the Lao Peace and Solidarity Committee, who have always accompanied him in the cause of peace and friendship.
He said that, established in 1950, the Vietnam Peace Committee is one of the first multilateral people's organizations in Vietnam, established under the direction of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh to operate in the field of people's diplomacy, linking the Vietnamese people's movement for national independence and reunification with the world's peacekeeping cause. Through many generations of leaders laying the foundation and working hard to build it, the Committee has continuously grown, making significant contributions to the cause of national liberation, national reunification, building and defending the Fatherland of Vietnam, while also contributing to the world people's movement for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.
Mr. Uong Chu Luu affirmed that receiving the award is not only a personal honor but also a reminder of responsibility in the context of global peace facing many challenges from war, conflict, inequality and violence. In the coming time, the Vietnam Peace Committee will continue to promote people-to-people diplomacy, foster friendship and solidarity between the Vietnamese people and international friends, contributing to building a fair, civilized and sustainably developed world.
