The exhibition is organized to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), the 113th birthday of General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-2024); the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024) and the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024).

Connecting documentary images and poetry to vividly recreate the milestones of the Dien Bien Phu victory

The historic victory of Dien Bien Phu - the peak of the 1953 - 1954 Winter-Spring strategic offensive - was the greatest and most brilliant victory of our entire Party, army and people in the resistance war against French colonialism (1945-1954). The victory of Dien Bien Phu is associated with the name of General Vo Nguyen Giap, an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh, a great personality, a staunch revolutionary of the Party, and a military genius of the Vietnamese people.

The exhibition “Following the General’s Footsteps” includes 92 panels with photos of General Vo Nguyen Giap provided by Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Women’s Museum and Photographer Tran Hong; along with 110 poems by teacher, poet and journalist Nguyen Thi My Dung, who had the opportunity to meet and write many articles and poems about General Vo Nguyen Giap over the past 20 years with deep respect and affection.

The exhibition is presented in 3 themes: "Making the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu", "The general in the hearts of the people" "Shining forever". Part 1 includes works to introduce the whole picture of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign under the talented leadership of General Vo Nguyen Giap, each combat strategy, each fierce battle on the Dien Bien Phu battlefield associated with legendary places such as A1 hill, C1 hill, E1 hill, Muong Thanh field, Hong Cum, Doc Lap hill, Him Lam hill, De Castries bunker...

Part 2 introduces the simple, everyday moments of a legendary general, a brilliant military leader of Vietnam. These are the peaceful, simple moments in everyday life or the wandering moments of an artistic soul, or simply the warm smiles with loved ones in everyday life.

Part 3 aims to honor and express gratitude for the great contributions of General Vo Nguyen Giap to the cause of national liberation, national reunification, building and defending the Fatherland; to remember the sacred feelings and deep concern of the beloved General for the people.

Teacher, journalist, poet Nguyen Thi My Dung, author of the works displayed at the exhibition, shared: She herself had many opportunities to meet General Vo Nguyen Giap and was told many stories about his life and career by the General. Therefore, she turned those stories into poems, and at the same time, during the times she met the General and witnessed the daily life of his family, she was also inspired to write these poems.

This is the sixth time the exhibition “Following the General’s Footsteps” has been held. To make historical knowledge easier to remember, the form of reciting songs, that is, performing poems, is a very superior method. If you read all the poems, you will recreate quite completely the historical events and developments in the 56-day and night Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Learning history through poetry will bring high efficiency, contributing to educating the tradition of patriotism to future generations,” Ms. Nguyen Thi My Dung shared at the exhibition.

Through the connection between documentary images and poetry, the exhibition vividly recreated the milestones of the historic Dien Bien Phu victory, as well as the daily life of the Commander-in-Chief of the Vietnam People's Army and the people's affection for the General.

The exhibition “Following the General’s Footsteps” brought many emotions to viewers and inspired the younger generation to appreciate the sacrifices of their fathers and elders, nurturing and arousing patriotism and revolutionary spirit to build a more prosperous and beautiful homeland.

As a visitor to the exhibition, Mr. Tran Minh Hung (Vinh city, Nghe An province) felt extremely moved when reading the poems written about General Vo Nguyen Giap. These are works that recreate the General's exploits in the campaign to everyday moments, simple meals with family. All are expressed by the author with simple, everyday words but bring a lot of emotions. This is a very meaningful exhibition in the homeland of beloved Uncle Ho, allowing us to review the heroic years of resistance of the nation.
