Mr. Dang Van Quang, Deputy Director in charge of the Provincial State Legal Aid Center, said: Every year, the center has developed a communication plan on legal aid policies for the elderly in the province. In particular, it focuses on particularly difficult villages where the elderly have little access to legal information. Legal aid contents focus on practical issues, such as: Policies for the elderly; inheritance disputes, land use rights; domestic violence; procedures for requesting legal aid...
The Center coordinates with the local authorities, the Association of the Elderly and mass organizations to disseminate laws that are practical, easy to understand, easy to remember, and directly related to the rights and obligations of the elderly. At the dissemination sessions, lawyers and legal assistants receive documents and provide free advice on the spot for those in need of assistance; thereby promptly resolving legal problems, limiting the occurrence of complaints and prolonged disputes.
Mr. Lo Van On, a member of the Phieng Nong Village Elderly Association, Noong Lay Commune, Thuan Chau District, shared: I actively participate in propaganda campaigns to disseminate the Party's guidelines, policies and laws of the State organized by the commune and village, and have legal aid officers answer questions related to the regime and policies for the elderly; procedures for requesting legal aid in case of disputes... Thanks to that, when I encounter legal problems, I know how to contact them for support.
Since the beginning of the year, the Center has organized 12 communication sessions in especially difficult villages in the communes, with over 800 participants, distributing 600 legal brochures for people to study. Over the past 2 years, the Center has provided legal aid to 60 cases for the elderly, mainly legal advice, participation in litigation, and out-of-court representation.
In addition, the State Legal Aid Center also provides legal aid to the elderly. A typical case is the case of Ms. Lo Thi Phong, 63 years old, in Huoi Thon village, Chieng Hac commune, Yen Chau district, whose savings deposit at the commune cultural post office was appropriated. The center assigned a lawyer to coordinate with the local authorities to verify the case and support Ms. Phong in completing legal documents and records. Ms. Phong shared: Although she is old and has limited knowledge of the law, thanks to the enthusiastic guidance and support of the center and lawyers in legal procedures, I was able to receive back all the money I lost.
To improve the effectiveness of protecting the legal rights and interests of the elderly who are eligible for legal aid, the Provincial State Legal Aid Center continues to coordinate with relevant agencies and organizations, especially the prosecution agencies and the Association of the Elderly, to promote communication and guide elderly members to exercise their right to legal aid.
