Malaysia A man in Sabah state planted a banana tree in a pothole on a road near his village and posted it online to remind local authorities to fix it.
"I feel sorry for the road users. Next time I will cover the potholes with asphalt," Mahathir Aripin wrote on his Facebook page on January 29, along with a photo of a banana tree planted in a pothole on a road near his village to warn road users. The banana tree's roots were covered with soil to keep it upright.
The Sabah Public Works Department confirmed that workers were dispatched to fix the potholes a few hours later. The agency said it was unable to repair the road sooner due to “continuous rain” in the area.

Many Facebook users supported Mahathir’s actions. Leon Chan commented that Sabah’s road conditions were “the worst in Malaysia” in years. Others joked that Mahathir should plant durian instead of bananas.
Roads with potholes and poor road conditions, which lead to road accidents, are a major problem in Malaysia. Alliance for Community Safety 2023 president Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the government has failed to address the issue for decades.
"Local authorities should have mobile patrol teams to continuously check roads and warn relevant agencies of incidents for prompt resolution," he said.
