Malaysia and China exchanged 31 cooperation agreements on AI, trade, and tourism.

China is ready to cooperate closely with Malaysia to promote a shared China-Malaysia future community at the high strategic level and bring more benefits to the people of both countries.

On April 16, during his state visit to Malaysia, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the exchange of 31 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and related documents covering various areas of cooperation between the two countries, including trade in services, the digital economy , artificial intelligence (AI), and tourism.

According to the VNA correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, three cooperation agreements were exchanged between Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. These included joint agreements to promote cooperation under the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, as well as to enhance development cooperation and support the implementation of the Global Development Initiative.

In addition, the two sides also reached an agreement on a general visa exemption for holders of official and ordinary passports.

In the field of trade, the two sides also exchanged three agreements, including trade in services, standardization cooperation, and strengthening the Malaysia-China "Two Countries, Two Parks" initiative.

Additionally, Malaysia and China also exchanged several agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of railways, digital technology, and education .

The two sides also exchanged additional memoranda of understanding covering areas under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security; the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; the Ministry of Higher Education; and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, as well as cooperation between media organizations and universities.

Another noteworthy point is the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of news and information.

Through this Memorandum of Understanding, the National Television of Malaysia (RTM) and Xinhua News Agency will cooperate in joint media activities, particularly in news exchange and co-production of programs and documentaries to showcase the unique cultures of each country and promote deeper understanding between the people of the two nations.

Additionally, there is another Memorandum of Understanding relating to communications between the Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) and China Media Group (CMG) and the Malaysian national news agency Bernama.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Seri Perdana Complex (Prime Minister's Office) on the same day, Prime Minister Anwar said that as the current ASEAN Chair and the National Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to promoting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between ASEAN and China through dialogue, mutual trust, and people-centered initiatives.

For his part, President Xi Jinping expressed a strong commitment to bilateral cooperation with Malaysia.

He stated his readiness to work closely with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to further promote the China-Malaysia shared future community at the high strategic level, bringing more benefits to the people of both countries and contributing to the prosperity of the region.

In 2024, Malaysia and China celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Since 2009, China has been Malaysia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years. In 2024, the total trade value between the two countries reached US$115 billion, accounting for 16.8% of Malaysia's total global trade value of US$600 billion.
