Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed on April 9: "The US is arbitrarily imposing tariffs on China and continuously exerting extreme pressure. China firmly opposes and will never accept such imposition and bullying."

According to CNN, Mr. Lin added: "If the US disregards the interests of both countries and the international community and resolutely carries out tariff wars and trade wars, China will fight to the end. The legitimate development rights of the Chinese people cannot be taken away, and China's sovereignty , security and development interests cannot be violated."

Beijing has not announced immediate retaliatory measures against Donald Trump's latest round of tariffs.

But so far, the message from the Chinese government and state media has been one of determination to fight back.

From 0:01 on April 9 (US time), the reciprocal tax of 11%-84% applied to dozens of major US trading partners will take effect. Imports from the European Union, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and India will be subject to a tax of 20-26%. China will be subject to the highest reciprocal tax rate of 84%, bringing the total additional tax rate this country must bear to 104%.
