The National Immigration Agency (NIA) announced that the transit visa will be extended to 240 hours or 10 days, from 72-144 hours previously. The aim is to attract more foreign visitors. The regulation announced this morning will take effect immediately.
Citizens from 54 countries, including Russia, Brazil, the UK, the US, and Canada, transiting from China to a third country (region) can enter China at any of the 60 ports of entry in 24 provinces without a visa, staying in the designated area for no more than 240 hours.
Since opening its borders after Covid-19 in early 2023, China has continuously exempted visas for many groups to increase the number of foreign visitors.
In November, China’s Foreign Ministry said the country now exempts citizens from visas from 38 countries. They can stay in China for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges and transit without applying for a visa.
NIA said that in the third quarter of 2024, foreign tourists made 8.2 million trips to China, up 48.8% year-on-year. More than half of these were facilitated by the visa exemption policy, up 78.6% year-on-year.
