(Dan Tri) - On the 5th day of competition at the Paris Olympics, the Chinese sports delegation surpassed Japan to take the lead in the medal tally, while Southeast Asian countries have not won any medals.
On the competition day yesterday (July 31), the Chinese sports delegation won 3 gold medals to surpass Japan to lead the medal table of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The athlete pair Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan were the "openers" on the 5th day of competition at the Olympics for China when they won the women's 10m platform double diving event.

Next up was Deng Yawen, who won the gold medal in the women's freestyle BMX event. This victory for China was considered a surprise because she was only 18 years old and was competing in the Olympics for the first time in the event. However, her performance was impressive and her score of 92.6 helped Deng Yawen surpass five-time world champion Hannah Roberts of the United States to win the gold medal.

At the end of the day, Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle won the gold medal in the men's 100m freestyle and broke the world record with a time of 46.40 seconds. The three gold medals on July 30 and early August 1 helped China win a total of nine gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, in addition to seven silver and three bronze medals. Not only did China surpass Japan, but host France also surpassed Japan to take second place on the medal table, even though they both had eight gold medals, but fewer silver and bronze medals. The hero of the host country was swimmer Leon Marchand when he won two gold medals in the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke. So far, Leon Marchand has won a total of three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He will have one final event, the 200m medley. If he continues to win, the 2002-born athlete will certainly be one of the best athletes at the Paris Olympics. Yesterday, Japan only won 1 gold medal in the men's all-around gymnastics event thanks to Shinnosuke Oka. Notably, the US sports team continued to disappoint when they only won 1 more gold medal in the women's 1,500m freestyle swimming event by Katie Ledecky and dropped to 7th place in the overall standings. The Korean sports team rose to 6th place with 6 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 3 bronze medals, while England and Australia shared 5th and 4th place respectively. After the 5th day of competition at the Paris Olympics 2024, countries in the Southeast Asian region have not been able to win any medals. As of 7:00 a.m. on August 1 (Vietnam time), the Paris Olympics 2024 witnessed 23 sports teams with gold medals out of 47 medal-winning teams.
China leads the 2024 Paris Olympics medal tally with 9 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals.
On July 31, the Vietnamese sports delegation still could not create a surprise when Nguyen Thuy Linh lost narrowly to Beiwen Zhang (20-22, 20-22), saying goodbye to the Olympics right from the group stage. Thuy Linh ended her journey to the 2024 Olympics with a record of one win and one loss, ranking second in Group K of the women's singles badminton. Each group only took one representative to the quarterfinals and Zhang Beiwen was the one who got the ticket to continue. Right after Thuy Linh, badminton player Le Duc Phat also shared the same fate when he lost to Prannoy Haseena and said goodbye to the 2024 Paris Olympics from the group stage. Previously, Hoang Thi Tinh (judo), Ha Thi Linh, Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing) and Pham Thi Hue (rowing) also said goodbye to the Olympics when they could not create a surprise against opponents of a better level.
