Indonesian football boss speaks decisively, coach Shin Tae Yong has no chance

(Dan Tri) - Despite coach Shin Tae Yong recently declaring his willingness to reunite with the Indonesian team if invited, President of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) Erick Thohir still firmly refused.

Recently, speaking on a media channel, Korean coach Shin Tae Yong said he has always been interested in Indonesian football. At the same time, Mr. Shin Tae Yong said he is willing to return to the position of coach of the Indonesian national team, if he receives a sincere offer.

Responding to the intention of the Korean coach, PSSI President Erick Thohir frankly told the media of the archipelago country yesterday (October 23), in Jakarta (Indonesia): "We must forget Mr. Patrick Kluivert and Shin Tae Yong. Indonesian football must continue to move forward."

“We have passed the period of being associated with coach Patrick Kluivert, and also passed the period of being associated with coach Shin Tae Yong. Both of these figures are in the past of Indonesian football,” PSSI President Erick Thohir emphasized.

Coach Shin Tae Yong was fired by PSSI on January 6, just one day after the AFF Cup 2024 ended. This is the tournament in which the Indonesian team was eliminated in the group stage.

Coach Patrick Kluivert was fired by PSSI on October 16, just one day after the 4th qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia ended. This is the tournament in which the Indonesian team could not complete the goal of winning a ticket to the final round.

These decisions of PSSI in general and President Erick Thohir in particular reflect the decisive actions of the billionaire who is leading Indonesian football. Mr. Erick Thohir does not hesitate to spend a lot of money on the Indonesian team, paying very high salaries to coaches, but high salaries must go hand in hand with immediate success.

Regarding the future coach of the Indonesian national team, succeeding Shin Tae Yong and Patrick Kluivert, PSSI President Erick Thohir stated: “Coach Patrick Kluivert and coach Shin Tae Yong each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the new coach of the Indonesian national team must see all the strengths and weaknesses of these two people.”

“I affirm once again, the Indonesian team must move forward, we will find a new coach for the national team,” the PSSI head said.

After the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in Asia, the Indonesian team has no important tournaments in the next half year. They have officially won tickets to the 2027 Asian Cup Finals, while the 2026 AFF Cup will not take place until the middle of next year. Therefore, PSSI still has a lot of time to find a new coach for the team of the archipelago country.
