Recently, speaking on a media channel, South Korean coach Shin Tae Yong stated that he has always been interested in Indonesian football. He also indicated that he is ready to return to the Indonesian national team coaching position if he receives a sincere offer.

In response to the South Korean coach's intentions, PSSI President Erick Thohir frankly told the Indonesian media yesterday (October 23) in Jakarta: "We must forget about Patrick Kluivert and Shin Tae Yong. Indonesian football must continue to move forward."
"We have moved past the era of coach Patrick Kluivert, and also the era of coach Shin Tae Yong. Both of these figures are now a thing of the past for Indonesian football," PSSI President Erick Thohir emphasized.
Coach Shin Tae Yong was sacked by PSSI on January 6th, just one day after the 2024 AFF Cup ended. This was the tournament where the Indonesian national team was eliminated in the group stage.
Coach Patrick Kluivert was sacked by PSSI on October 16th, just one day after the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia concluded. This was a tournament where the Indonesian national team failed to achieve their goal of qualifying for the finals.

These decisions by PSSI in general and Chairman Erick Thohir in particular reflect the decisive actions of the billionaire leading Indonesian football. Erick Thohir is not afraid to spend a lot of money on the Indonesian national team, paying very high salaries to coaches, but high compensation must be accompanied by immediate success.
Regarding the future coach of the Indonesian national team, succeeding Shin Tae Yong and Patrick Kluivert, PSSI President Erick Thohir stated: “Coach Patrick Kluivert and Coach Shin Tae Yong each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the new coach of the Indonesian national team must be able to see both the strengths and weaknesses of these two.”
"I reiterate that the Indonesian national team must move forward, and we will find a new coach for the national team," said the head of PSSI.
Following their Asian qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, the Indonesian national team has no other important tournaments in the next six months. They have already secured their place in the 2027 Asian Cup finals, while the 2026 AFF Cup won't take place until mid-next year. Therefore, the PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) has plenty of time to find a new coach for the team.
