China is surpassing the United States in the number of scientific research publications, especially in many key fields, signaling that the era of Silicon Valley and America's top universities leading the future of science may be coming to an end, according to the South China Morning Post on November 20.
Outstanding in quantity
The United States has long been known as a leader in medical research. But recent publishing trends suggest that this has changed.
Data from Digital Science shows that in 2024, China published 1.1 million scientific papers, far exceeding the US's 880,000.
In the medical field alone, China accounts for more than 50% of the total global articles, up 40% from 2023.
"There is no doubt that China is now the leading country in scientific publishing and the number of publications," said Fred Fenter, editor-in-chief of Frontiers , one of the world's leading academic publishers.
Mr Fenter stressed that this acceleration is not only about the scale but also the quality of research. Indicators such as patents show that China has surpassed the US in core areas of modern biomedicine.
Energy research is also making a mark, not just in the medical field. "China is absolutely leading with about 35% of all global papers with a very high level of influence," Mr. Fenter added.
In addition, Chinese universities and publishers are moving towards launching their own journals and platforms.
“It makes sense for China to build the infrastructure needed to publish its growing volume of research, especially as it tries to cement its position as an international scientific leader,” said Fenter.
According to Mr. Fenter, this trend is also inspiring many other countries to learn from China's current development model.
Quality improvement

China is not only making breakthroughs in scientific research publications, but also taking on an important role in the technology of the future.
Frontiers Data has come up with the Top 10 Emerging Technologies for 2025. These are areas that are predicted to become essential in the next 5 to 10 years such as artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology and designer biotherapeutics.
China has made major contributions to these three technologies such as green nitrogen fixation, new generation nuclear energy and bio-watermarking.
Scientists Li Hailong and Yang Zequn (Central South University) have developed an environmentally friendly green nitrogen fixation method, opening up prospects for changing global agriculture.
In the nuclear field, co-authored research at Xi'an Jiaotong University shows that next-generation reactors can increase fuel efficiency, reduce waste and emit less carbon.
New generation fission reactors promise to be safer, have greater fuel efficiency and could help reduce radioactive waste.
China has also poured huge sums of money into generative watermarking technology, which helps to trace the origin of AI-generated content. This technology helps build and strengthen user trust on digital platforms.
