Pham Ly Duc was a mainstay in the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club defense in the last V-League season. Possessing an impressive physique, the central defender from Tay Ninh was called up by coach Kim Sang-sik to the Vietnam national team and the U23 national team.
U23 Vietnam surpasses U23 Cambodia in match statistics
Despite his lack of international experience, Ly Duc has become a solid "wall" in the defense of the U23 Vietnam team at the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. Fiercely competitive but clever, Ly Duc often wins when facing tall strikers of the opponent.
In the second match of Group B, the player born in 2003 was the one who scored to help U23 Vietnam open the score. Joining the attack in a corner kick situation on the right wing, Ly Duc chose a reasonable position and headed the ball into the net of goalkeeper Reth Ly Heng in the 35th minute.
Ly Duc's "air combat" skills are often demonstrated in domestic competitions. The player of Hoang Anh Gia Lai is considered by experts to be a modern central defender, with comprehensive attack and defense.
Ly Duc was praised after the victory over U23 Cambodia.
After the victory over U23 Cambodia, Ly Duc received a "shower" of compliments from the audience. "Ly Duc is a model of a strong central defender, has an ideal physique and plays well in the air. Vietnamese football continues to produce another "steel" central defender, similar to Que Ngoc Hai, Bui Hoang Viet Anh..." - Vietnamese fans wrote on social networks.
Coach Kim Sang-sik also highly appreciated the performance of Ly Duc and the U23 Vietnam midfielders. Mr. Kim said: "We scored 3 goals from set pieces thanks to the midfielders. Hopefully they will continue to score in the semi-finals. Of course, I also hope that other players can shine more."
Coach Kim is confident to help U23 Vietnam reach the final of the tournament.
Entering the semi-finals of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship as Group B winners, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will face U23 Philippines on July 25. The three "tall" central defenders of U23 Vietnam continue to be a safe barrier when competing with the naturalized players of the Philippines.
Evaluating the opponent in the semi-finals, coach Kim Sang-sik affirmed: "We will prepare carefully to aim for victory. The Philippines is the away team, which will be different from facing the host Indonesia. However, they are a balanced team and have naturalized players. We have carefully analyzed their playing style and will have appropriate preparations."
