On September 5, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed and approved the project to build Vietnam Maritime University as a national key university in training and research to serve the sustainable development of the marine economy until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
According to the project, Vietnam Maritime University will be developed into a national key university in training, research, and technology transfer, focusing on the field of marine economy, serving the sustainable development of marine economy, contributing to ensuring national defense and security in the Red River Delta and the whole country.
The goal by 2030 is to develop the training scale to reach 26,000 - 28,000 students; the rate of postgraduate students will reach about 7.5%. By 2035, the development will reach 28,000 - 30,000 students; the rate of postgraduate students will reach 10% of the total number of students.
Key industries and fields that are given priority include: Marine science ; mechanical engineering; shipbuilding; control and automation; marine economy, logistics, marine construction; marine environment. By 2035, priority will be given to further development in the fields of remote sensing and navigation at sea; and materials.
By 2030, develop a team of high-quality lecturers, of which over 50% have doctoral degrees, over 15% have professor and associate professor titles. By 2035, develop 60% of lecturers with doctoral degrees, over 25% have professor and associate professor titles.
The goal by 2030 is to carry out at least 5 national-level science and technology tasks and 20 ministerial/sector-level science and technology tasks and equivalent tasks each year; the number of international articles will increase by over 12% each year, reaching at least 400 international articles/year by 2030.
By 2035, each year there will be at least 10 national-level science and technology tasks, 30 ministerial/sector-level science and technology tasks and equivalent; achieving at least 600 international articles/year.
In particular, by 2030, strive to become one of the top 5 centers for training high-quality maritime and marine economic human resources in the ASEAN region, in which the training sectors and fields: Maritime science and mechanical power are ranked in the top 10 in Asia.
The goal by 2035 is to become one of the top 3 centers for training high-quality maritime and marine economic human resources in the ASEAN region, in which the training sectors and fields: Maritime science, mechanical power, control and automation; marine economy, logistics are ranked in the top 10 in Asia.
By 2045, continue to improve quality, create breakthroughs in training high-quality human resources, scientific research, innovation, and technology transfer to meet the requirements of sustainable development of the marine and ocean economy, contributing to promoting socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security in the Red River Delta and the whole country.
Strive to reach the same level as maritime universities of developed countries in the Asia- Pacific region and in the world.
Tasks and solutions to achieve the above goals include expanding the scale and improving the quality of training, especially in key industries and fields with strengths and traditions of the school.
In addition, focus on investing in and developing facilities; improving the capacity of lecturers and researchers; promoting scientific research, innovation, technology transfer and enhancing international cooperation and integration.
In 2025, Vietnam Maritime University will enroll 5,000 full-time university students, with 50 training majors according to 6 independent admission methods. In the 2025-2026 school year, the school's training scale will be about 22,000 students.
