A male student at Yundong Boarding High School was punished for going to the toilet at 11 p.m., 15 minutes past the "curfew" set by the dormitory management. The incident has sparked a fierce debate in the Chinese media and public opinion.
When the male student used the restroom, a teacher caught him and recorded the incident as an act of indiscipline. The incident was then handled by the dormitory management with strict punishments.

The male student was required to write a self-criticism and make 1,000 copies to send to other students in the school. In addition, the school also deducted the competition points of the class the male student was studying.
In his self-criticism, the male student wrote: "I seriously violated the dormitory rules of the school. I went to the toilet at night, which could have affected the sleep of other students and also affected the competition results of my class."
Finally, the male student apologized to his classmates and school board, and promised not to repeat this behavior in the future.
An anonymous teacher who teaches at the school told the media that students at the school were previously banned from leaving their dorm rooms after 10:45 p.m.
Leaving the room to use the restroom is also not allowed. Students who need to use the bathroom after curfew must go to the dormitory management for approval.
Disciplining students for going to the toilet after curfew has sparked heated debate in China. Many netizens believe that the school's rules are inhumane and can have a negative impact on students' physical and mental health.
The online community also believes that overly harsh regulations will prevent the school from creating a friendly learning environment for students.
Education authorities in Hoai Nhan city had to intervene, asking the boarding school's board of directors to adjust the overly harsh living regulations for students.
A representative of the authorities involved in handling the incident said: "We have asked the school's board of directors to learn from this incident and recognize the problems in the way students are managed. We also asked the school to review all the disciplinary criteria currently applied in the school."
Authorities asked the school to take a warm and constructive approach when students violated discipline. In addition, the school should return 100 yuan (VND350,000) to the male student who was disciplined. This is the cost the student had to spend to photocopy 1,000 copies of self-criticism to send to his classmates.
Authorities have also sent notices to all schools in Huainen City to review the disciplinary criteria they are applying. Authorities require that the disciplinary criteria must be reasonable and humane, have good educational value and not create bad public opinion.
