
In 1990, Ha Long High School for the Gifted was established. This event transformed the specialized system of Quang Ninh from being scattered in several high schools in the province to an independent school, playing a central role in the province's key training work; gathering gifted students, as well as a team of excellent teachers to promote the overall strength.
In the early days, the school had only 6 classes with 75 students. The facilities were still lacking, the classrooms were simple, and teaching equipment was very limited. In the 2010-2011 school year, the school moved to a new facility with a 2.66ha campus with a synchronous and spacious planning, opening up a modern educational space, capable of meeting the requirements of training talents in the integration period.
The school scale has been expanded with 40 classrooms, of which 13 classrooms are equipped with smart devices, a national standard laboratory - practice system, a library, a multi-purpose hall, a sports field, a dormitory and a public house.
Over the past 5 years, the education of Ha Long High School for the Gifted has made great strides. The school has 1,102 provincial-level excellent student awards (144 first prizes, 249 second prizes, 359 third prizes, 349 consolation prizes) and 289 national excellent student awards (8 first prizes, 74 second prizes, 88 third prizes, 119 consolation prizes).
The number and quality of awards have increased steadily over the years, contributing to the school's outstanding educational achievements, entering the top 10 schools in provinces and cities with the highest number of students winning national excellent student awards in the country.
In the field of science and technology, the school has won 12 provincial and 8 national prizes, contributing to affirming the scientific research capacity of Quang Ninh province's specialized students. In the international arena, the outstanding mark of Ha Long High School for the Gifted students is the Silver Medal in Asia-Pacific Informatics, Bronze Medal in European Physics, Bronze Medal in the international field of life sciences, along with many gold medals, silver medals, and bronze medals at international science and invention competitions in Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
Notably, in the 2024-2025 school year, student Trinh Viet Hoang won a silver medal at the 2025 International Chemistry Olympiad (ARBIChO). Immediately after that, in the world's most prestigious and prestigious academic arena - the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Bolivia, student Ninh Quang Thang won a bronze medal, adding a new milestone to the school's record of achievements.

In the 2020-2025 period, Ha Long High School for the Gifted will stabilize the size of 38 classes, with about 1,300 students, maintaining 10 specialized subjects. From the 2024-2025 school year, the scale will be expanded to include a French specialized class. The teaching staff is regularly trained professionally to meet the requirements of the times and educational innovation. The rate of excellent students in the whole school is always above 93%. The rate of students passing the entrance exams to domestic and foreign universities is 100%.
Along with the students' achievements, the school's teaching staff has also continuously made impressive achievements. In the 2022-2023 school year, 3 teachers of the school were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher (teacher Do Thi Dieu Thuy, Principal; teacher Pham Van Ninh, Head of the Math - IT Group; teacher Khong Thi Thu Trang, Head of the History - Geography Group). From 2020 to now, the school has had hundreds of teachers awarded for their outstanding achievements in training excellent students at national and international levels and other tasks.
Not only focusing on improving the quality of key education, the school also aims to build a comprehensive, modern, and humane learning environment, where each student is nurtured with dreams, develops personality, abilities, and strengths. Extracurricular activities, arts, sports, scientific research, and international exchanges are organized regularly, creating conditions for students to develop comprehensively, forming soft skills, integration capacity, and a sense of responsibility to the community.
