VTC NewsVTC News30/07/2023

According to Earth Sky, August will welcome the two biggest supermoons of the year, including the full moon on August 2nd, located 357,530 km from Earth, and the "super blue moon" on August 31st, located 357,344 km away.

This distance is much closer than the July supermoon (361,934 km from Earth).

The August moon is often called the "orange moon" or "red moon" because it often ranges in hue from pale orange to burnt orange to orange-red depending on the time and conditions.

Firstly, it is because the position of the earth in summer causes the moon to hang low, meaning we will see the new moon rising at sunset very close to the horizon, which means looking through a thick layer of atmosphere.

This layer of atmosphere will act as a prism that disperses light, so the full moon appears orange even though it still radiates silvery white light as usual.

The orange color will gradually darken to burnt orange, red orange if the atmosphere is more dense due to air pollution, especially forest fire smoke which is usually denser in the summer.

In Vietnam, observers have begun to see the orange full moon since May. The super orange moon in August is expected to have a darker hue.

According to Time and Date, the orange supermoon will reach perfect fullness at 1:30 a.m. on August 2, Vietnam time zone.

However, because the moon rises higher towards midnight, this will not be the time to observe the biggest and most beautiful moon.

To see the biggest orange supermoon, you can observe it a few hours in advance, preferably at sunset, when the moon has just risen and is hanging lowest. At that time, the full moon will have the most distinct orange color, and it will also be accompanied by the phenomenon of "moon illusion" that makes this supermoon look even bigger than it actually is.

Even though the moon is not perfectly full at sunset, you can barely notice it when observing it with the naked eye, or even taking pictures.
