Major risk factors for eye disease include oxidative stress and high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which damage the vascular components of the retina and impair cellular function. AGEs cause a variety of eye diseases. In diabetics, AGEs are not only associated with the common complication of macular degeneration, but also promote some kidney and heart complications.

Thirty-four elderly volunteers were tested by consuming 1.5 cups of grapes (about 200 grams) or a placebo every day for 16 consecutive weeks, the results showed that the group that did not eat grapes had a significant increase in AGE levels. For those who ate grapes, in addition to lower AGE levels, they also benefited from an increase in Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD), plasma antioxidant capacity, and higher total phenolic levels. These are all factors that show that eating grapes helps eliminate harmful factors for the eyes.
According to Dr. Jung Eun Kim, co-author, this discovery is extremely easy to apply and extremely useful in the context of many countries in the world facing population aging, leading to an increase in the number of eye and vision diseases.
