10th grade admission in Hanoi: What will the exam scores and benchmark scores be?

More than 102,000 candidates in Hanoi have just taken the non-specialized exam to enroll in public grade 10. The concern now is whether the admission scores to schools will fluctuate significantly?

All three subjects, literature, math, and foreign language (English) in the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi that just took place, were predicted by many teachers to have a score range of 7 - 8 points.

Literature is unpredictable

Of the three subjects, literature is still the most unpredictable. There are three factors that contribute to the "unpredictability". Firstly, this year's students study the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, which is different from last year's students who studied the 2006 General Education Program. The different program with changes in teaching methods, learning methods, and assessment methods has a big impact on the candidates.

Second, the exam structure has changed compared to previous years and has a special new feature of using materials outside of the textbook. This may cause difficulties for many candidates.

Third is the open-ended test. With an open-ended test, candidates are freer to be creative, but it is also easy to get sidetracked and get off-topic if they do not read the test carefully, understand the test, and manage their time. Open-ended tests can make many candidates subjectively think that they "did well" but do not know that they are missing ideas or deviate from the required content. With open-ended tests, the marking instructions and the examiner's point of view are very important and will have a big impact on the test results. If the test is graded by "counting ideas for points", it will be different from the flexible grading method to encourage candidates' creativity.

Many teachers asked said that there will be many 8 points in literature this year. A smaller number of teachers said that the score range will be only 6 - 7. However, the predicted score range of 6 - 7 also suggests that the percentage of 8 points will be higher than last year.

Math is considered by teachers to be innovative but not groundbreaking. Mr. Do Van Bao, a math teacher at Vinschool, commented that compared to last year, there were additional topics on data statistics and probability, and related knowledge was grouped into larger topics.
Mr. Bao believes that the exam is consistent with the spirit of the 2018 General Education Program, with more than 50% of the test material originating from real-life problems, students need to apply calculation skills or create equations, solve equations and then draw conclusions about real-life problems. But Mr. Bao still believes: "innovative but not surprising". According to Mr. Bao, the score range of 7 - 7.5 will be high.

Mr. Le Van Cuong, a teacher at Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School, also said that the exam was easy, safe, and not much changed, so he predicted that there would be many 8s. Even students with good academic performance could easily get 9s and 10s.

In English, according to Hanoi teachers, about 80% of the questions are at a basic level. There are 20% of questions that are differentiated, with only about 4-5 difficult questions. With this level, many students in the inner city can easily get a score of 8-8.5 in English. However, this is a subject that will have a clear differentiation in level between students in inner and outer districts.

Benchmarks may increase slightly at the top

Looking back at the benchmark scores of the top schools in Hanoi over the past three years, we can see that the average score of each subject in the benchmark is above 8 - 8.5. Specifically, Phan Dinh Phung High School in the past three years, the average score of each subject in the benchmark is 8.4 points, 8.55 points and 8.35 points respectively. Tran Phu High School, Hoan Kiem is 8.05 points, 8.35 points and 7.9 points. Viet Duc High School is 8.35 points, 8.6 points and 8.25 points...

Some principals believe that this year there will be no sudden change in the admission scores at the top schools because it is predicted that the percentage of candidates with good and excellent academic performance at the secondary school level with a score of 8 - 8.5/subject will be high, and this is also the number with the first choice to enter the top schools. However, the number of candidates with a score of 9 - 10/subject will be low.
The top schools are the group of schools that have to accept fluctuations because many students register for their first choice but are admitted to specialized schools. These are also the number of students who are likely to fall into the small group of students who score 9-10 points/subject. Therefore, the benchmark scores of the top schools in the non-specialized group will fluctuate less.

In the middle-ranking schools, the inner-city areas may see more obvious changes. Partly because the percentage of students scoring 7-8/subject may increase compared to last year, partly because the number of candidates applying for both first and second choices to some schools has increased sharply.

Lower-ranking schools are still "average"

Last year, Hanoi had about 10 public high schools, mainly in the suburbs, with low benchmark scores (average score per subject was only 5 points or less). Although the average score this year may be higher, many predict that the benchmark scores of the city's bottom schools will still be difficult to improve because the attractiveness of these schools is not high.

Mobilizing over 2,000 teachers to grade exams

At a press conference on the 10th grade entrance exam (June 8), the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that they will mobilize over 2,000 officials and teachers to participate in marking the exam. It is expected that the scores will be announced on the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's information portal around July 4 at the earliest. The benchmark scores will be announced immediately after the exam scores are available.
By July 8 at the latest, schools will receive the exam results to issue to students. From July 10 to July 12, admitted students must confirm their enrollment (online or in person). On July 17, schools that do not have enough students will enroll additional students and from July 19 to July 22, admitted students will confirm their enrollment.
