Foreign exchange rates today May 10: Domestic USD increases

In the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), decreased by 0.22% to 100.42. In Vietnam, the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong against the USD increased by 24 VND, currently at 24,951 VND.

The dollar eased slightly in the last trading session but is on track to gain this week against major currencies, including the Swiss franc, Japanese yen and euro, after the US-UK trade deal raised optimism about upcoming US-China talks.

Financial markets are now looking ahead to trade talks between Washington and Beijing scheduled to begin today, May 10, in Switzerland.

On May 8, President Donald Trump announced a trade deal between the US and the UK. However, the US will still maintain a 10% tariff on most goods imported from the UK.

The deal is the first of dozens of trade deals the Trump administration is expected to announce in the coming weeks. Britain is the first country to reach an agreement with Washington since President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on April 2 aimed at reshaping global trade and reducing the US goods trade deficit.

Previously, on April 2, Mr. Trump announced a basic reciprocal tax of 10% on most trading partners and from 11 to 50% on 57% of other partners, including the European Union (EU). He then postponed imposing high reciprocal taxes to make time for negotiations. At the same time, his administration imposed a 25% tariff on imported cars and ended all tariff exemptions on imported aluminum and steel.

“The market is optimistic about progress in the US-China trade talks in particular and more trade deals in general,” said Matthew Weller, director of market research at StoneX.

The US dollar was on track for a fourth straight weekly gain against the Swiss franc, but fell 0.01% to 0.83150 francs in the last session.

Meanwhile, the euro posted its third consecutive weekly decline against the greenback. However, the euro rose 0.17% to $1.125025 in the last trading session.

The US currency is also on track to gain for a third straight week against the Japanese yen, although it fell 0.39% to 145.355 yen in the last session.

The pound is trading higher and building on its weekly gains after losing ground on May 8 following the announcement of a U.S.-UK trade deal. The currency rose 0.50% to $1.3306.

Central bank decisions this week were mixed, with the US Federal Reserve leaving interest rates unchanged, while the Bank of England cut rates. The central banks of Sweden and Norway decided to keep rates unchanged.

In contrast to other G10 currencies, the US dollar fell against some Asian currencies this week. The greenback weakened 0.02% to 7.241 against the Chinese yuan.

Domestic foreign exchange rates

In the domestic market, at the beginning of the trading session on May 10, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong against the USD increased by 24 VND, currently at 24,951 VND.

* The reference exchange rate at the State Bank's transaction office increased slightly, currently at: 23,754 VND - 26,148 VND.
