The dollar was headed for its first weekly gain since mid-March after China exempted some tariffs on U.S. imports, raising hopes that the trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies may be about to cool.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), stopped at 98.59 - up 0.05 points compared to April 25, 2025.

The US currency has been volatile this week amid conflicting signs of a thaw in the tense relationship between Washington and Beijing. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump hinted at a de-escalation of their tit-for-tat tariff war, saying face-to-face talks were underway.
The dollar rose against a basket of currencies, up about 0.2% on the day and on track for its first modest weekly gain since mid-March. “I don’t think things are necessarily much clearer now, but it feels like there’s no further escalation,” said Fiona Cincotta, market strategist at City Index. “It feels like it’s going in the opposite direction and if anything, it seems to be heading towards de-escalation rather than escalation.”
But even with some exemptions, there hasn't been enough clarity on the bigger picture to fully reverse some of the outflows from the dollar, which has fallen 4% since Trump first announced the "Liberation Day" tariffs on April 2.
"We've seen a bounce from oversold territory. But it's certainly too early to celebrate a recovery in the USD, we're not there yet," Cincotta said.
The dollar rose 0.82% on the day against the Japanese yen at 143.775 and gained 0.42% against the Swiss franc at 0.82985 franc.
The euro fell 0.24% to $1.1363, while the pound fell 0.12% to $1.332, even after stronger-than-expected UK retail sales figures.
