The greenback ended the week up 0.21% at 99.59 after China granted some tariff exemptions on U.S. imports, raising hopes that the trade war between the world’s two largest economies may be easing. The U.S. currency has been hit hard this week by conflicting signs of a thaw in the tense relationship between Washington and Beijing.
The dollar has been weighed down by mixed signals on the progress of US-China relations this week, with President Donald Trump saying face-to-face talks are underway and proposing measures to ease tariff tensions, according to financial expert Amanda Cooper on Investing.com.
In terms of specific developments, the USD increased by 0.67% against the Japanese Yen, to 143.555 JPY/USD and increased slightly by 0.09% against the Swiss Franc, reaching 0.827 CHF/USD. On the contrary, the Euro decreased by 0.11%, trading at 1.1377 USD, while the British pound also retreated by 0.1% to 1.3325 USD, despite the retail sales figures in the UK exceeding expectations.
With current developments, experts believe that the recovery trend of the USD is still quite fragile and depends heavily on the actual results of the US-China trade negotiations as well as the upcoming monetary policies of the US Federal Reserve (Fed).
