USD/JPY exchange rate today 5/17/2025
The USD/JPY pair has recovered slightly, rising to near 145.95. The recovery momentum is mainly due to the rebound of the USD. The US Dollar Index (DXY) has risen above 101, reflecting the recovery of the USD against six major currencies.
Consumer inflation expectations for the next year rose sharply from 6.5% to 7.3%. This development increases the possibility that the US Federal Reserve will continue to hold interest rates instead of cutting them, as previously expected.
The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index (CSI) also caused concern when it fell to 50.8, the lowest level since June 2022 and much lower than the expectation of 53.4. This was the fifth consecutive month of decline.
Meanwhile, the Japanese yen remained relatively strong, despite Japan’s first-quarter GDP data showing the economy contracted 0.2% in the January-March period, below the forecast of a 0.1% decline. That followed a strong 0.6% growth in the final quarter of 2024.
Analysts from UOB Group, including Quek Ser Leang and Peter Chia, said that the USD could retest the 144.95 support level against the Japanese yen, but the possibility of a clear break below this level is low. In the medium term, the USD uptrend has weakened, and USD/JPY is expected to fluctuate in a range of 144.50 to 148.50 in the near term.
