Kyiv Post quoted the Ukrainian Air Force as saying that Russia launched 66 Iranian-made Shahed UAVs on December 31, 2023, and 26 on January 1.
"The air defense forces destroyed a record number of enemy attack drones, 87 out of 90," AFP quoted the Ukrainian Air Force as saying.
The Ukrainian Air Force also said Moscow had launched missiles into the Kharkov region in the northeast of the country, as well as into the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions in the south.
Kiev also said that Odessa was attacked on New Year's Eve, killing one person, according to emergency services. At the same time, a 73-year-old woman in Kherson was also killed by shelling.
UAV attacks also targeted the city of Lvov in western Ukraine, near the Polish border.
Lvov Mayor Andriy Sadovy said a university linked to Ukrainian nationalists and a museum were damaged.
Moscow and Kiev have stepped up their attacks on each other in recent days, with an unprecedented Ukrainian attack on the city of Belgorod killing 24 people on December 30, 2023.
A day earlier, Russia launched one of the largest missile and drone strikes in the war in Ukraine, killing 39 people.
