Exchange rate developments in the world market

In the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.36% to 107.04.

The US dollar rose to a 13-month high as investors assessed the latest labour market data and comments from US Federal Reserve officials on the path of interest rates.

Initial weekly jobless claims fell 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000, the lowest in seven months and below the 220,000 estimate of economists in a Reuters poll, according to new data.

The data showed a recovery in job growth after being disrupted by storms and worker strikes last month.

However, the report also pointed to slack in the labor market as the unemployed took longer to find new jobs, as the number of unemployed rose to a three-year high, giving the Fed room to cut interest rates again in December.

Recent comments from Fed officials, including Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, have suggested that the central bank may take a slower pace of rate cuts, amid concerns that Donald Trump's policies could stoke inflation.

The above factors helped push the USD to 107.15, the highest level since October 4, 2023.

In contrast, the EUR fell 0.64% to $1.0476 after hitting $1.0461, a 13-month low.

Safe-haven currencies such as the Japanese yen and Swiss franc briefly rose following the latest signs of escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

Against the Japanese yen, the dollar fell 0.56 percent to 154.56 after falling as much as 0.98 percent during the session.
