Early season pink litchi 200,000 VND per kg

Early-ripening litchi from the Central Highlands has a selling price increase of 10-15% compared to the same period in 2024, up to VND200,000 per kg, due to limited supply at the beginning of the season.

Pink lychee at a store in Ho Chi Minh City is selling for 150,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, living in District 3 (Ho Chi Minh City), said she spent more than 1 million VND to buy 5 kg of U Hong lychee, equivalent to 200,000 VND per kg. "This price is reasonable for the first fruit of the season, which is both delicious and of guaranteed quality," she said.

The lychee that Ms. Mai chose is a selected early ripe fruit, sold at high-end fruit stores in District 1. The staff here said that since the beginning of the season, the store has only imported two batches with a total of about 100 kg, all of which were pre-ordered by regular customers.

In Hanoi , the situation is similar. Some fruit shops in Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay districts said that they can only import 2-3 boxes of export-standard U Hong lychees each time. According to store staff, the lychees here are large, round, 80-90% sweet, and sold for 145,000 VND per kilogram. Due to limited supply, customers often have to order in advance via the website.

Ms. Tran Ngoc Chau, owner of Tam Ngoc fruit farm (District 8), said that the price at the garden at the beginning of the season was quite high, about 80,000 VND per kg. However, in the past two days, the price has started to cool down as production increased, currently remaining at about 60,000 VND per kg.

"Every day, I import about 200 kg. To ensure quality, I require the garden to pick every other day and at the right ripeness," said Ms. Chau.

On social media groups, early-ripening lychees are being sold at wholesale prices ranging from 45,000 to 100,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the type. Some places are selling them for only 20,000 - 25,000 VND per kilogram with a deposit required, but have been warned of signs of fraud. According to gardeners in the Central Highlands, the price of lychees sold for the whole garden is currently around 35,000 - 45,000 VND per kilogram. Due to low early-season output, prices remain high.

Ms. Luong, a gardener in Kon Tum who owns 30 lychee trees, said that this year she harvested 6 tons, earning VND250 million in revenue. "This year is the biggest profit since growing lychee," she shared.

Many large gardeners in Dak Lak also recorded revenue of 400 to 500 million VND. If last year's crop failed due to unfavorable weather, this year they harvested lychees with much higher yields.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Lak province, the province currently has about 2,570 hectares of lychee, of which 1,358 hectares have produced products, with an output of more than 10,000 tons. Because the output is still low at the beginning of the season, lychee prices are high but are expected to cool down when entering the main season. Compared to last year, thanks to a good harvest, mid-season prices this year may be lower.

Dak Lak lychee, also known as U Hong lychee or hybrid lychee, is different from Bac Giang lychee in appearance and flavor. The lychee has fruit as big as a chicken egg, with a rosy pink skin, a sweet taste mixed with a little sourness, not as strong as lychee in the North. Thanks to its early ripening about a month and its quality is not inferior, U Hong lychee is increasingly favored by the market, with prices always high at the beginning of the season.
