A symbol of the tradition of valuing education.

According to the book "Outstanding Scholars, Intellectuals, and Artisans of Thuong Tin District from 1075-2015," this land has 68 scholars who have been honored. In the past, Van Tu Thuong Phuc was a place of worship for the virtuous and talented scholars of the "land of a hundred crafts" south of Thang Long Imperial City.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang, the current caretaker of Thuong Phuc Temple, said: "Thuong Phuc Temple is a place of worship and honor for the ancestors and scholars of the former Thuong Phuc district (now Thuong Tin district). Previously, the temple was located in An Duyen commune (now An Duyen village, To Hieu commune). The remaining stele system at Thuong Phuc Temple, along with the rubbings of stele inscriptions from 8196 to 8199 from the Far East Institute of Archaeology, the Institute of Han Nom Studies, and the Academy of Social Sciences, confirms that Thuong Phuc Temple was built by Doctor Duong Cong Do (Quy Hoi Khoa, Third Class Doctor of Philosophy, Phung Sai Thanh Hoa, Doc Dong Quan, from Nhi Khe) in An Duyen commune, Tin An district in the 16th year of Chinh Hoa (1695)."

Over the years, due to historical events, the Thuong Phuc Temple of Literature also deteriorated. Recognizing its cultural and historical value, in 1755, Mr. Nguyen Quan, the District Chief of Phuc Xuyen, renovated it. Later, Mr. Dinh Quan, a teacher in Ly Nhan Prefecture, built the front hall. Then, the District Chief of Hoai An also renovated the Thuong Phuc Temple of Literature, making it more majestic. However, the temple grounds were narrow at that time, located in low-lying areas, and prone to flooding in late autumn, so the ceremonies could not be held on the proper days. In the year Tan Mui, during the reign of Tu Duc, the temple walls were swept away by floodwaters.

In 1812, the stele and artifacts of the Temple of Literature were moved to Van Hoi village, Van Gap commune, Thuong Phuc district (now Van Hoi village, Van Binh commune). Governor Cao Huu Sung, along with the royal family and scholars, undertook its reconstruction. Construction began in the winter of the year Canh Ty (1810) and was completed in a full year. Sixty years later, the Temple of Literature was renovated again, and then repaired another 20 years later. Through the ups and downs of time, the Temple of Literature in Thuong Phuc was only considered the Temple of Literature of Van Hoi village, and therefore received little attention, gradually shrinking and falling into disrepair, failing to live up to its potential as a place honoring education and the tradition of studiousness in the district.

According to the Secretary of the Thuong Tin District Party Committee, Nguyen Tien Minh, it is not by chance that the Thuong Phuc Temple has such a name. Through hundreds of years of history, nurtured by heroes and scholars, the temple has been built and restored to this day as a testament to culture and history. With this significance in mind, the Standing Committee of the Thuong Tin District Party Committee, 23rd term, issued a resolution on the socialization of "Investment in the construction and promotion of the cultural and historical value of the Thuong Phuc Temple." Construction officially commenced on January 9, 2019. The newly built Thuong Phuc Temple covers a total area of over 3,500 square meters. The structure has a "Công" (Chinese character for "work") shape, comprising a front hall, incense burning area, rear hall, left and right wings, stele house, bronze pillars, and other auxiliary structures.

Attractive destination

After two years of construction, Thuong Phuc Temple was completed and put into operation in 2022. Since then, Thuong Phuc Temple has become a destination in the cultural and historical tourism journey for the people of Thuong Tin in particular, and of Hanoi and the whole country in general.

The Thuong Phuc Temple still preserves stone tablets inscribed with the names of scholars from the former Thuong Tin district, including national hero Nguyen Trai, scholar Nguyen Phi Khanh, second-class doctoral graduate Ly Tu Tan; and other scholars such as Duong Truc Nguyen, Tran Trong Lieu, Ngo Hoan, Nguyen Y, Duong Cong Do, Ung Ngan Luong, Vu Duc Chinh, Nguyen Trac, Doan Hoanh Tuan, Duong Hang, Doan Mau Khoi, and Confucian scholar and patriot Luong Van Can... These are talented individuals not only of Thuong Tin and Hanoi, but also of the whole country, who have made their mark in history and contributed greatly to the development of culture and education during the feudal dynasties in Vietnam.

The Van Tu Thuong Phuc project is also a key project and a highlight of Thuong Tin in implementing Resolution No. 09-NQ/TU of the Hanoi City Party Committee dated February 22, 2022, on "Developing the cultural industry in the Capital City in the period 2021-2025, orientation to 2030, vision to 2045".

Over the years, Van Tu Thuong Phuc has become a destination of culture and history. Every year in early spring (on the 9th day of the first lunar month), Thuong Tin district organizes the Calligraphy Festival here. During exam season, thousands of people come here to seek calligraphy, visit, and enjoy tourism, along with the hopes and dreams of future academic success for the students.

According to Nguyen Tien Minh, Secretary of the Thuong Tin District Party Committee, the annual Calligraphy Festival and Traditional Craft Village Recognition aims to awaken the pride in the tradition of studiousness and academic achievement of this land of hundreds of crafts; and at the same time, preserve and promote the value of historical and cultural relics in the area. It is also an opportunity to express gratitude to the ancestors who contributed to passing on the craft; to commend, reward, encourage, and recognize organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to preserving and developing traditional crafts and craft villages, affirming the role of traditional craft villages in the socio-economic development of the locality...

In particular, the festival held at Van Tu Thuong Phuc serves as a message to the people of Thuong Tin, especially the younger generation, to emulate, learn from, and continue to develop the finest traditions left by their ancestors for future generations, in order to build Thuong Tin into an increasingly prosperous, beautiful, and civilized place, rising alongside the nation.
