Hoang Thi Ngoc Hoa fainted while competing in the women's marathon at the 33rd SEA Games last night (December 14).

The 25-year-old runner felt dizzy and fainted about 3km from the finish line, while she was in the top 3 alongside Bui Thi Thu Ha.

After receiving care in a medical tent for some time, Ngoc Hoa was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment. By late that night, her health had stabilized and she was discharged from the hospital that same night.

She is currently being cared for by the Vietnamese sports delegation at the hotel, and the entire team will fly back to Vietnam on December 17th.

Earlier, her teammate Bui Thi Thu Ha also fainted after winning the bronze medal with a time of 2 hours 54 minutes and 40 seconds. Fortunately, Ha only suffered a mild dizziness and recovered soon after.

Finishing above Ha were gold medalist Odekta Elvina Naibaho (Indonesia) with a time of 2 hours 43 minutes and 13 seconds, and silver medalist Artjoy Torregosa (Philippines) with a time of 2 hours and 48 minutes.

Marathons are the most demanding event in track and field and one of the most grueling in sports, requiring athletes to complete a distance of up to 42.195 km. Therefore, fainting, heatstroke, or other more serious problems are common occurrences during races.
