Reality and concerns of doctors

According to statistics from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (GLOBOCAN) published in 2022, Vietnam recorded nearly 200,000 new cancer cases, of which about 30% were cancers related to the digestive tract such as esophageal, stomach, and colorectal cancer. This is not only the most common cancer group, but also has the highest mortality rate.

Analyzing the above situation, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Van Hong - Director of MEDLATEC Digestive Center; Former Deputy Head of Gastroenterology Department, Bach Mai Hospital; Lecturer of Gastroenterology Department, Hanoi Medical University, said: The modern lifestyle, irregular diet, unsafe food, work pressure, stress, along with high rate of HP bacteria infection and lack of initiative in health screening have created a "combination" of risk factors.

During nearly 40 years of working, Associate Professor Van Hong has successfully treated thousands of complicated cases, helping them escape from physical pain and mental worries. Many patients went to many different places for examination but could not be cured. Only when they met Ms. Hong could their diseases be well controlled, or completely cured. However, there were also many cases that made experts regret and worry.

The patient was a 55-year-old male who came to the clinic with severe gastritis. During the endoscopy, a suspicious lesion was detected. Therefore, Associate Professor Hong immediately removed the entire lesion and took a biopsy. The diagnosis showed that the patient had stomach cancer.

Despite being explained about the treatment and follow-up methods, the patient was so worried and thought that gastrectomy was the optimal method to remove the tumor, so he decided to go to Singapore for surgery. However, when the entire stomach was removed and histopathology was performed, the results showed that there were no cancer cells.

After that, the patient returned to MEDLATEC to ask for the candle block, the specimen was sent to Singapore to be re-read, and they also recognized that it was cancer cells. “I am very sorry about this case, because in fact, the cancer cells were cells detected at a very early stage and the entire lesion was removed by us during endoscopy without having to cut any part of the stomach. Up to now, after 10 years of close monitoring, although the gastrectomy affected the digestive system, the patient's health is currently stable,” Associate Professor Van Hong shared.

From there, the expert determined to bring the world 's most modern technology to Vietnam, helping people protect their digestive health in a comprehensive and sustainable way.

Building a "stronghold" to protect digestive health

MEDLATEC Digestive Center gathers a team of experts, PhDs, Masters, and doctors who are formally trained domestically and internationally to work full-time.

As an expert with a lot of passion in the field of digestion, Associate Professor Hong clearly understands that to gain the trust of patients and at the same time change the situation of screening and treatment of digestive diseases in Vietnam, a specialized medical model is needed - a place that brings together high-quality human resources, modern technology and operating procedures according to international standards.

As Director of MEDLATEC Digestive Center, Associate Professor not only focuses on expertise, but also builds a systematic and sustainable development strategy, aiming at the goal of proactively, comprehensively and standardizedly caring for people's digestive systems.

“We have a team of experts, PhDs, Masters, and gastroenterologists who have been formally trained domestically and internationally and are working full-time. In particular, the Center's doctors are trained and updated with new knowledge regularly through conferences, seminars, and professional activities that take place periodically every week and every month within the system, as well as in conjunction with foreign partners. Thanks to that constantly updated knowledge, each customer/patient coming to MEDLATEC has access to diagnosis and treatment in a "personalized" way, even in complex cases, the doctors are always confident in examining and treating patients," said Associate Professor Van Hong.

On April 5, the scientific conference on Updating diagnosis and treatment of cancer using ESD method was held at MEDLATEC Healthcare System. Attending the conference were Dr. Kenichiro Imai - Head of Endoscopy Department, Shizuoka Cancer Center; leading expert in lower gastrointestinal intervention in Japan.

Dr. Kenichiro emphasized that gastrointestinal endoscopy is the most effective tool for early cancer prevention. The detection and complete removal of lesions such as polyps during endoscopy is completely possible if doctors continuously improve their professional skills. Participating in the workshop is a valuable opportunity for experts and doctors to share knowledge and develop together.

Not outside the development trend of world medicine, the Director of the Digestive Center said: "The focus of our development plan is strong investment in advanced endoscopic technology."

The field of gastroenterology includes many different types of diseases, from digestive tract problems such as: esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum-anus; to digestive tract diseases such as: liver, gallbladder, pancreas. Based on the strengths of expertise, techniques and technology, MEDLATEC can effectively diagnose, treat and manage most diseases of the digestive system.

Currently, the Center is one of the few medical facilities investing in the world's most modern system of machines, Olympus EVIS X1 CV1500 (Japan). This system integrates 4 superior technologies to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, including: TXI, NBI, RDI and EDOF technology.

Olympus EVIS X1 allows the detection of digestive cancers when the tumor has just appeared on the mucosal surface, a stage when the cancer can be completely cured. These tumors are often not detectable by conventional endoscopic methods. Thanks to this technology, the Center has detected hundreds of cases of early-stage digestive cancers in 2024.

For cases detected at an early stage, the Center applies the ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) technique - an endoscopic method of submucosal dissection. This technique allows the entire lesion to be removed from the mucosal layer without open surgery, chemotherapy or additional radiation therapy.

With the long-term vision and dedication of the leader, MEDLATEC Digestive Center is gradually becoming a trusted address for people in digestive health care. This is not only a place for medical examination and treatment, but also a "stronghold" to protect Vietnamese people from silent but extremely dangerous diseases.
