Why did Denis Villeneuve only adapt 'Dunes' until part 3?

The blockbuster Dune: Part Two essentially brings to the screen the second half of the first book in Frank Herbert's six-book Dune saga. Dune is vast and massive, and the story Denis Villeneuve adapted is just a very short slice of that "universe" timeline.

According to international sources, Dune: Part Three is nearing completion of the script. This part is adapted from the second book in the Dune series , Dune Messiah , which continues the story of Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides, now Emperor after launching a holy war against the great families. The original book delves into the relationship between the Emperor - now looking for a successor - and his wife Irulan, as well as Chani, who is extremely dissatisfied after the war in part 2.

The timeline of part 3 takes place 12 years after part 2. The crew just stopped and did not go further into the developments in the later episodes, and director Denis Villeneuve also confirmed that part 3 is the final movie in the Dune franchise.

The biggest challenge in adapting Dune: Part Three is the problem that lies within the source material itself. In the previous two film adaptations, the three pillars of Dune - politics , ecology and religion - were exploited very well, and the action scenes associated with the Fremen uprising were exploited by the director through epic battles. However, in the book Dune Messiah , the dramatic and action elements give way to political debates and endless discussions. If these elements were fully included in the film, the director would likely "lull" the audience to sleep.

In addition, the scale of the book is larger, more suitable for a TV series than a film project. Therefore, when adapting the book to film, the crew will have to calculate how to have a film that attracts audiences while still respecting the original, as the director did in the previous two films.

One of the plus points of the previous two Dune movies is the eye-catching battle scenes.

The later books in the Dune saga have had their fans, but they have also had their fair share of critics. Even director Denis Villeneuve himself has admitted that Frank Herbert's later books were more "mysterious" than action-packed, so he only adapted Dune Messiah and left it at that. "If I could do the Dune trilogy, that would be fantastic," he once said.

Dune 1 and 2 bring to the screen the worldview and the majestic, surreal images of civilizations that Frank Herbert envisioned nearly 70 years ago. Dune tells the story of the Fremen uprising on the sand planet amid political intrigue and religious factions. Part 1, despite being released during the pandemic, still earned more than 434 million USD worldwide, while Part 2 is currently showing in theaters and has earned over 369 million USD worldwide.

Critics and audiences alike have praised Denis Villeneuve's adaptation as creative, while also respecting the late author's original work.
