By May 3, when the long holiday of April 30 and May 1 had almost passed, Da Lat still only welcomed a moderate number of visitors.

Dalat is noticeably deserted during the long holiday.

Although there are no official statistics, many people working in the tourism industry say that the number of tourists coming to Da Lat is only higher than on normal weekends of the year.

The number of visitors during the April 30 holiday this year in Da Lat cannot be compared to Tet, summer weekends or holidays before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the center of Da Lat, traffic jams and congestion did not occur. On Bao Loc Pass (Highway 20), the number of tourists entering Lam Dong province to go to Da Lat was not too large. This pass and Highway 20 had a large number of vehicles but there was no congestion or blockage.

The main roads leading to the center of Da Lat city are bustling with private cars and passenger vans but are clear, without local congestion.

At famous tourist attractions and entertainment areas in Da Lat such as the City Flower Garden, Valley of Love, Datanla Waterfall tourist area, Sculpture Tunnel, etc., the number of visitors increased compared to normal days, but only reached 30 - 50% of expected capacity.

On Nguyen Chi Thanh, Hoang Van Thu, Bui Thi Xuan, Ba Thang Hai, Ba Thang Tu streets..., most of the star hotels have signs showing that rooms are available, and there is no sign of overcrowding.

The fact that the number of tourists coming to Da Lat has not suddenly increased has surprised many people.

During the April 30 and May 1 holidays, Da Lat city forecasts that the city will welcome about 80,000 visitors. However, tourism businesses say that Da Lat will find it difficult to reach the expected number.

Has the flow of visitors changed or is there nothing new in Dalat?

Mr. NQĐ. is the owner of many famous tourist attractions in Da Lat. He sighed: “Compared to the same period last year, the number of visitors to many of my tourist attractions has decreased by 60%, even though I have renewed my products.”

Mr. D. explained with data recorded by the sales department: the Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Thiet highway changed the flow of visitors to Da Lat and directly affected the length of stay and use of services in Da Lat.

“In the past, tourists came to Da Lat for 2-3 days and nights. Now that there is a highway, tourists often go to Phan Thiet, Nha Trang for beach tourism, then come to Da Lat for a session and a night. Therefore, it can be seen that the number of visitors may remain unchanged or decrease slightly, but the length of stay and use of services is not much,” Mr. D. acknowledged.

According to him, there are currently not many new products to advertise and market for Da Lat tourism. The instability in the number of visitors and spending on services in Da Lat has caused many investors to choose other locations to do business with faster capital recovery and profit.

Mr. NTT, the owner of a company specializing in outdoor and camping tours in the forest, shared about the "sadness" of traveling during the low season.

“Da Lat is clearly lacking visitors this year. We should face it head on that the climate in Da Lat is very attractive, but tourists need more than just cool weather for a long vacation. Last year, Da Lat had some new tourism products, but they are still not as attractive as neighboring areas,” said the businessman.

In addition, according to Mr. T., Da Lat does not have large enough tourist attractions like Nha Trang and Phan Thiet. The lack of new products makes it difficult for tour companies to sell to customers.

"The structure of a tour must have new and old points to be attractive. If it is only full of points that everyone already knows, it will be difficult to sell," Mr. T. shared.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province, there are many reasons for the lack of tourists in Da Lat during the holiday. The department's leaders said that the current transportation system has changed a lot, so tourists stay for a short time and travel to many places. Therefore, tourist destinations are not too crowded.

The leader of this department shared that this year, tourists have paid more attention to Ho Chi Minh City. After the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South, tourists visited Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces. Therefore, Da Lat became less crowded.

However, the leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province also agree with the view that Da Lat is lacking tourism products with long-term appeal.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Dong, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "I am a regular visitor to Da Lat. I come to Da Lat to relax in the cool weather. But tourists like me are only a few. I think the majority need to have many new and fancy tourist attractions in Da Lat to spend money. If you only come to eat snacks, drink coffee, and drink, it is not attractive enough, especially if you travel in a group or with your family."
