Why shouldn't you take the second semester exam too early?

Decision 2159 of the Ministry of Education and Training specifically states the time frame for the 2022-2023 school year, in which schools must complete their education plans before May 25 and end the school year before May 31. Students will have summer vacation from May 31, 2023.

However, the Ministry of Education and Training allows localities to flexibly plan accordingly. Departments of Education and Training provide plans for the time to organize semester exams for schools.

In reality, many schools are "worried" (about scores, records, school year summary...) so they organize the second semester exam as soon as possible, usually in mid-to-late April. Many schools complete the second semester exam before the April 30 holiday, so there is still a whole month of May ahead.

According to the 2022-2023 school year schedule, the school will complete the education plan before May 25 and end the school year before May 31.

Students are negligent, teachers are tired of managing

A year ago, I witnessed a situation that showed why schools should not organize second semester exams too early. That day, when the bell rang to start class, I passed a class and saw students jokingly writing on a piece of paper hanging in front of the door: "No need to see teachers!". This came from the common thinking of the students that the second semester exams were over, there was no need to study anymore, teachers did not need to come to class, because teaching and learning at this time were very ineffective.

That has been the common situation for a long time in most schools from elementary to high school: students are inattentive after exams, while schools and teachers are exhausted from having to manage order and discipline.

A friend whose child is in 3rd grade at an elementary school in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, recently said: "These past few days, my child said he didn't study anything at school because the exams were over. The teacher just took the whole class to the library to read books and watch movies for the rest of the day."

It is not uncommon for teachers to let students watch movies on the TV screen in class until the end of the period or session because at this time, teachers have to do paperwork, complete grades, and it is difficult to concentrate on teaching.

How should the school handle this?

Most school leaders are aware of the above situation but do not have specific, feasible solutions.

According to the teaching plan of all subjects built at the beginning of the school year, after the second semester test, students must learn the remaining content of the program. However, this knowledge is not taught effectively because most teachers ignore it, and students are negligent because there are no more tests and assessments. Such lessons will cause disadvantages for learners.

To limit this situation, first of all, school leaders need to rebuild the school year plan in accordance with the plan from the Department of Education and Training.

Schools need to check, remind, and have a firm attitude towards the teaching and learning of teachers and students after organizing the second semester exam. This is the "golden time" for schools to consolidate knowledge for students, taking advantage of it to organize cultural, sports and artistic activities. Group activities should also be included at this time so that students have the opportunity to participate, avoiding negligence./.
