Stopping the operation of the milk tea shop that caused 17 students to be poisoned

According to the report of the Buon Ma Thuot Food Safety Department, at around 12:30 on November 22, Mr. VVT (parent of VVH - a 5B grade student at Ly Thuong Kiet Primary School) went to May milk tea shop to order 36 cups of milk tea for 35 children and the homeroom teacher of class 5B.

17 students were taken to hospital after drinking milk tea

At 1:45 p.m., Mr. VVT received the milk tea and drove it straight to the school gate, giving it to the children to bring into class and consume. At 2 p.m., about 15 minutes after drinking the milk tea, many students began to show signs of stomachache, nausea, and vomiting.

At 3:00 p.m. the same day, the homeroom teacher saw that many children had stomachaches, dizziness, fatigue, vomiting many times and 2 children had diarrhea, so she contacted the school's Board of Directors to transfer the children to the Emergency Department - Thien Hanh General Hospital for examination and treatment. A total of 17 students were hospitalized with the diagnosis: Food poisoning. At 7:00 p.m. the same day, the health of the 17 students was stable and they were discharged from the hospital to go home for monitoring.

Immediately after receiving information about the above food poisoning incident, Buon Ma Thuot Food Safety Department established a food safety inspection team at the suspected food poisoning facility and took food samples to send to the Central Highlands Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for testing to find the cause.

Through working, initially, the M. coffee and beverage business establishment could not provide a certificate of food safety eligibility, health certificate...so the inspection team requested this establishment to temporarily suspend business operations.

This is not an uncommon case as many students have been poisoned after drinking milk tea. Specifically, on October 16, many students at Le Hong Phong Secondary School (Duc Trong District, Lam Dong Province) showed signs of food poisoning after drinking milk tea.

The school's leaders said that a 6th grade class won first prize in a soccer competition, so the parents asked the homeroom teacher for permission to buy milk tea from outside for the children to drink.

Of the 46 students who drank the milk tea, 16 showed signs of stomachache and vomiting afterwards. The school quickly took all the students who drank the milk tea to Lien Nghia Medical Station and Duc Trong District Medical Center for examination and treatment.

On September 25, Pom Han Secondary School ( Lao Cai ) organized a chemistry class with content for students to experience making milk tea. The experience included a teacher and 38 students of class 8A2. Students practiced right in the classroom. After completion, the subject teacher and the students drank milk tea and graded it. More than an hour later, 5 students showed symptoms of stomachache, nausea, headache, and loose stools.

The children were taken to the school's medical room for examination, then taken to Lao Cai General Hospital. At the hospital, they were diagnosed with food poisoning. That same afternoon, all five children were discharged from the hospital and returned to school as usual the next day.

After the incident, the City Health Center coordinated to inspect and collect 6 samples of food ingredients that the business sold to students to send to the National Institute for Food Safety Control for testing. The business also violated a number of regulations such as not posting prices and many items of unknown origin. The inspection team drew up a record and issued a decision to handle the above business.

Ingredients containing many chemicals are the cause of milk tea poisoning.

Experts say that milk tea is considered one of the best-selling drinks in Vietnam. According to research, the main ingredient of milk tea is cream mixed with tea powder and other additives such as aromatic essential oils, colorants, etc.

Milk tea contains many chemicals and fatty acids that are harmful to health.

These ingredients contain a large amount of sugar, saturated fat and trans fatty acids which are very bad for human health. Therefore, everyone should limit drinking milk tea, especially those with obesity, diabetes, and malnutrition.

In addition to causing obesity, it also affects sperm quality and sperm motility and increases the risk of infertility in men. Therefore, experts recommend that men should stay away from milk tea.

Milk tea attracts young people because of its delicious taste, easy to drink and many new flavors. However, the production of milk tea does not ensure food hygiene and safety, the ingredients contain many chemicals which are the cause of milk tea poisoning.

Similar to food poisoning, young people who drink milk tea containing toxic chemicals often feel dizzy and nauseous when poisoned. A typical sign of milk tea poisoning is abdominal cramps.

After that, the body begins to heat up and has flu-like symptoms. The victim begins to have a fever or body temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius. After a few hours of poisoning, the victim may have diarrhea, loose stools for about 2-3 days. At the same time, blood also appears in the stool. If diarrhea lasts too long due to milk tea poisoning, if not treated promptly, it can lead to dehydration, threatening the victim's life.

Currently, milk tea ingredients are often purchased at wholesale markets, with unknown origins, so when consumers want to drink milk tea, they should choose a reputable, quality and verified place to buy it. According to nutrition experts, we should limit drinking milk tea, instead we should drink natural, nutritious fruit juices to supplement nutrition and energy for the body.
