(TN&MT) - On the morning of January 9, Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Do Duc Duy had an important working session with Singaporean Ambassador Jaya Ratnam and colleagues at the Singaporean Embassy. The meeting aimed to discuss new cooperation directions between the two countries in the fields of environment, climate change, and sustainable development.
At the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy emphasized the importance of Singapore as a strategic partner in the region. The comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in recent times has contributed to solving environmental and climate challenges, while opening up new development opportunities.
During his visit to Singapore in December 2024, the Minister participated in many important meetings, including discussions with the Speaker of the Singaporean Parliament and Minister of Manpower Tan See Leng to discuss orientations to promote cooperation between the two ministries in the coming time. Minister Do Duc Duy acknowledged that this outstanding result was significantly contributed by the active support from the Singapore Embassy in Vietnam.
During this meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Jaya Ratnam discussed the contents of Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. The two sides expressed their deep interest in promoting cooperation between Vietnam and Singapore in implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in 2022, thereby moving towards building a specific Cooperation Agreement on exchanging results of greenhouse gas emission reduction. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will continue to promote negotiations and implement cooperation projects according to the guidelines of COP29.
Regarding sustainable development of the marine economy and renewable energy, Minister Do Duc Duy and Ambassador Jaya Ratnam shared information on cooperation in the field of renewable energy, especially offshore wind power. Singapore plans to import 4GW of clean electricity from countries in the region by 2035, and the offshore wind power project between the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) and Sembcorp (Singapore) is one of the typical examples of this cooperation.
Minister Do Duc Duy said that the Vietnamese National Assembly has passed the Electricity Law and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is the agency in charge of conducting a basic investigation to determine the potential of offshore wind power as a basis for development projects, thereby contributing to the implementation of many goals on renewable energy development, environmental protection, climate change response and sustainable development of the marine economy.
Regarding the content of Digital Economy and Green Economy, Ambassador Jaya Ratnam said that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment plays an important role in advising the Government on development in these two areas, so Singapore is ready to support Vietnam in building a digital platform in the field of natural resources and environment, especially in environmental monitoring and surveillance activities, and natural disaster warning. Initiatives on digital transformation and clean energy will be the focus of the next cooperation relationship between the two countries.
At the end of the meeting, Minister Do Duc Duy expressed his hope that the Singapore Embassy will continue to be an important bridge to promote cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Singaporean partners. The Minister also emphasized that after the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment merged with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the areas of cooperation between the two sides will be increasingly expanded, including the completion of policy institutions on green economy, circular economy, energy security and food security.
Minister Do Duc Duy believes that the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Singapore will continue to develop, contributing to building a sustainable future for both countries, while contributing to the common development of the region and the world.
