The Vietnamese team won first prize at the 15th Multicultural Culinary Competition organized by the Yongsan District Family Center in Seoul to honor the cultural diversity of the region.
The Yongsan District Government said this year's contest is themed "Global Taste Meets Korean Taste," reflecting Yongsan's characteristics as having the highest rate of multicultural households in Seoul.
The area, which has been established for decades, is home to a large US military base and has the international Itaewon neighborhood, home to many embassies and Seoul's largest mosque.
This year's competition attracted teams from seven countries, including Vietnam, China, Japan, the Philippines, India, Mexico and Nigeria.
Each team was asked to create a dish that combined their country's signature flavors with traditional Korean ingredients, including kimchi and at least one of three Korean condiments: soy sauce, Gochujang chili paste, or Doenjang bean paste.
The Vietnamese team wowed the judges with their vibrant spring rolls and rainbow fried rice, winning first place overall. The Mexican and Chinese teams won second and third place respectively.
Speaking after winning the prize, the Vietnamese team members said they were very happy with the results and especially enjoyed the cultural exchange experience through this competition.
Besides the cooking competition, the event also has many experiential activities for visitors such as trying on traditional costumes and playing folk games of the participating countries.
Ms. Park Hee Young - Yongsan District Chief, emphasized: "I am very happy to feel the value of culture and exchange through dishes that uniquely combine kimchi and traditional cuisine of different countries. In Yongsan, where cultures live together, we will do our best so that everyone can live together happily and in harmony"./.
