TMJ affirms that Vietnam does not complain about the naturalization case. |
Speaking at a press conference at the Grand Dorsett Subang Hotel on the afternoon of October 25 ( Hanoi time), TMJ said: "I was informed by the AFC that the complaint did not come from the VFF, nor from the General Secretary or the President of the VFF. Yet FIFA was willing to accept and investigate, which is really strange."
The former president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) also spoke out to defend naturalized players. "It is completely wrong to say that the players are fake. They are Malaysians, that is written in our Constitution," he affirmed. "Ask the National Registration Department if in doubt."
TMJ believes that any questions about the origins or bloodlines of the 7 naturalized players should be sent to the National Registration Department (NRD) – the agency responsible for assessing citizenship applications. "If NRD accepts the documents submitted by FAM, it means they have fully considered them. Anyone who wants to know who the players' grandparents are should go and ask NRD," he concluded.
According to FIFA, many of the birth certificates of the grandparents of players including Facundo Garces, Imanol Machuca, Hector Hevel, Gabriel Palmero, Rodrigo Holgado, Joao Figueiredo and Jon Irazabal "do not match" the original data in their countries of birth.
The incident created the biggest storm in Malaysian football history. A series of newspapers in the region described this as a "naturalization earthquake", while fans were deeply divided about the role of FAM in the process of selecting foreign-born players.
