At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of November 6, answering a reporter's question about Vietnam's efforts in preventing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang affirmed: "Vietnam's stance on this issue is consistent and has been stated many times."
Vietnam advocates sustainable development of the marine economy , maintaining sustainable development of the fisheries sector, with a vessel and craft structure suitable to the exploitation capacity of aquatic resources and fully complying with regulations against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
In recent times, Vietnam has built and perfected the legal system on fisheries, ensuring effectiveness and efficiency, while implementing many strong measures to combat and prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; resolutely and seriously handle violations.
Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed and issued the Action Plan for the peak month against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and sustainable development of Vietnam's fisheries industry.
Authorities and localities have been and will regularly manage, propagate, educate and implement many specific measures so that fishermen comply with Vietnamese law, respect the sea areas of countries established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and international conventions and agreements that Vietnam has signed or is a member of.
Ms. Pham Thu Hang emphasized that as an active and proactive member of the international community, Vietnam is always ready to work with countries in the region and the international community to strengthen cooperation and share experiences in combating illegal fishing, promoting effective and sustainable fisheries management in accordance with international law.
