According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), tea imports to the UK market in the first 6 months of 2023 reached 53 thousand tons, worth 160 million USD, down 9.7% in volume and 9.4% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

The average imported tea price into the UK market in the first half of 2023 reached 3,015.8 USD/ton, up 0.2% over the same period in 2022.

The UK imported the most tea from the Kenyan market in the first half of 2022, accounting for 56.8% of total imports, reaching 30.1 thousand tons, worth 70.9 million USD, up 3.2% in volume and 1.6% in value over the same period in 2022.

The average price of imported tea from Kenya to the UK was low at 2,353.5 USD/ton, down 1.6% compared to the same period in 2022. This was followed by imports from markets such as India, Malawi, Switzerland, Rwanda...

Vietnam is the 23rd largest tea supplier to the UK, and the volume and value of tea imports from Vietnam decreased sharply in the first half of 2023. The average price of imported tea from Vietnam to the UK market reached 4,927.6 USD/ton, down 0.4% over the same period in 2022. The proportion of tea imports from Vietnam accounts for only 0.1% of the total volume of tea imported into the UK market.

Black tea and green tea are the two main types imported by the UK market in the first half of 2023. Of which, black tea led the way with 51.7 thousand tons, worth 146.3 million USD, down 9% in volume and 9.2% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Kenya is the main market supplying black tea to the UK in the first half of 2023, reaching 30.1 thousand tons, worth 70.9 million USD, up 3.2% in volume and 1.6% in value over the same period in 2022; followed by markets such as India, Malawi, Switzerland...

The UK imported 1,300 tonnes of green tea in the first half of 2023, worth 13.2 million USD, down 33.4% in volume and 13.5% in value compared to the same period in 2022. The average imported green tea price reached 10,392.6 USD/tonne, up 29.9% over the same period in 2022. China and India are the two main markets supplying green tea to the UK, accounting for 61.7% of total green tea imports. However, the volume and value of green tea imported from these two markets have both decreased sharply.

Along with that trend, the volume and value of green tea imports from Vietnam in the first 6 months of 2023 reached 51 tons, worth 243 thousand USD, down 36.2% in volume and 46.8% in value compared to the same period in 2022, the proportion of imports from Vietnam accounted for 4% of the total import volume into this market.
