Vietnam speaks out against China's fishing ban in the East Sea

On May 15, at the regular press conference of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang answered a number of reporters' questions.

Responding to a reporter's question asking about Vietnam's reaction to China's recent issuance of a fishing ban in the East Sea, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang stated:

Vietnam's stance on China's fishing ban in the East Sea is consistent and has been affirmed many times.

Vietnam demands that China respect Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago, as well as Vietnam's sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over its maritime zones established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, respect the rights of Vietnamese fishermen to legally operate in Vietnam's maritime zones and maritime zones beyond national jurisdiction in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, not take actions that complicate the situation, and contribute to maintaining peace, stability and law-based maritime order in the East Sea.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has communicated with the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi and handed over a diplomatic note protesting the above fishing ban.

Responding to a reporter's question requesting an update on the work of protecting citizens deported from Myanmar to date, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said:

Regarding the case of Vietnamese citizens violating immigration regulations and being detained in Myanmar, implementing the Government's direction, as of May 15, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnamese representative agencies in Myanmar and Thailand have closely coordinated with the Ministry of Public Security, relevant domestic agencies and local authorities to bring more than 450 citizens home safely.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working with relevant countries and continuing to direct Vietnamese representative agencies in Myanmar and Thailand to coordinate with local and domestic authorities to bring the remaining citizens home as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Vietnamese citizens be vigilant against invitations to go abroad for “easy work, high salary”. Citizens need to carefully research the content, regime, and expected location of the job to avoid falling into fraudulent “traps” and becoming illegal residents and workers abroad.
