The most emotional event on May 16 was weightlifting. Nguyen Quoc Toan broke three SEA Games records in the men's 89kg category. He achieved a snatch of 155kg, a clean and jerk of 190kg and a total of 345kg. The weightlifter from Bac Lieu changed the color of his medal after winning a bronze medal in the 81kg category last year. Following that success, Tran Dinh Thang dramatically defeated his Thai opponent Rungsuriya Panya in the men's over-89kg category thanks to two successful appeals by the coaching staff. He achieved a snatch of 150kg, a clean and jerk of 209kg and a total of 359kg, 1kg more than Panya.

Thus, Vietnamese weightlifting ended the 32nd SEA Games with four gold medals, exceeding the set target. Vietnam ranked second in this Olympic event, after Indonesia (five gold medals) and ahead of Thailand (two gold medals).
