Currently, there are 14 hydroelectric dams along the Mekong mainstream, including 12 Chinese dams. At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the reporter asked to state Vietnam's viewpoint on the impact of Chinese dams, as well as solutions and cooperation for sustainable development of the Mekong River.
Regarding this issue, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Doan Khac Viet said that the Mekong is a common cross-border river that flows through many countries.
"As a downstream country of the Mekong River, Vietnam is very concerned about the cross-border impacts and water storage capacity of hydropower projects on the Mekong River," Mr. Doan Khac Viet affirmed.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reiterated Vietnam's stance that the development and operation of hydropower projects on the Mekong River must ensure no negative impacts, including cross-border impacts on the environment, socio-economic development, and socio-economic life of countries in the Mekong River basin, especially downstream countries, and must comply with international law and practice.
Vietnam wishes and is ready to work with relevant countries to strengthen cooperation and effectively and sustainably use the Mekong River's water resources, ensuring harmony of interests among countries while not negatively impacting the lives of people in the basin, Mr. Doan Khac Viet informed.
