Malaysian players celebrate scoring against Vietnam - Photo: ANH KHOA
Malaysia confidently pressed the field from the start thanks to the good physique and technique of the naturalized players. This pushed the Vietnamese team deep into their own half. The home team probably wasn't used to the rhythm of coordination, so there were many unsophisticated moves.
But coach Kim Sang Sik's team did not have many solutions to control the ball. They could only defend well in the first 30 minutes of the match. After that, Malaysia pushed up again and started to have stormy situations.
Dion Cools' shot from a distance in the 36th minute hit the post. Then, Nguyen Filip made two brilliant saves against shots from Aimai and Figueiredo. Things became even more difficult for the Vietnamese team when Thanh Chung left the field early at the end of the first half due to injury. In the second half, everything quickly collapsed for the away team.
The naturalized Malaysian players showed their class as they competed to shine. In the 48th minute, Figueiredo took advantage of a ball stolen from midfield, charged straight into the middle and shot. The ball hit Duy Manh and changed direction, leaving Nguyen Filip helpless.
In the 59th minute, Holgado took advantage of Aiman's pass to skillfully handle the ball in the penalty area, raising the score to 2-0. The Vietnamese team collapsed when Corbin Ong scored in the 67th minute from an unmarked situation.
Vietnam were almost helpless, even though Malaysia played leisurely in the final minutes. The home team even added another goal in the 88th minute with a comfortable header from Dion Cools in the penalty area. 4-0 was the final score of the match, helping Malaysia beat Vietnam for the first time in 11 years.
