Compared to the same period in 2024, the volume increased by 12.2% but the value decreased by 8.9%. The main reason is that the average export price of rice in the 5 months was only 516.4 USD/ton, a sharp decrease of 18.7% compared to 2024.
Regarding the consumption market, in the first 5 months of 2025, the Philippines continued to be Vietnam's largest rice consumer market with a market share of 41.4%, however, the export value to this market in the first 4 months of 2025 decreased by 21.8%. In contrast, some other markets such as Ivory Coast and China grew impressively - up 2.7 times and 83.7% respectively over the same period last year.
Among the 15 largest rice exporting markets, Bangladesh recorded a remarkable increase in export value, up to 515.6 times; while Indonesia saw a sharp decrease of 97.9%. According to experts, these fluctuations reflect clear changes in demand and import policies of countries.
Despite the decline in average export prices, the reality is that Vietnam’s premium rice segment remains high and growing steadily. For example, ST25 rice – once awarded the “ world’s best rice” – can now sell for up to $1,200 per ton in the European market.
Faced with price pressure and fierce competition, the rice industry Vietnamese rice Vietnam is clearly showing its determination to shift towards high quality. Currently, high quality rice accounts for about 60-70% of total exports, branded premium rice accounts for about 15%, and the rest is regular rice.
Vietnamese rice is gradually escaping the image of cheap rice, to approach demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, EU or Canada. The event of 500 tons of Japonica rice with the brand name "Green Vietnamese Rice with Low Emissions" exported by Trung An Company to Japan on June 5, 2025 is clear evidence. This rice is priced at 850 USD/ton according to FOB price in Ho Chi Minh City, even over 1,000 USD/ton according to CIF price - a price equivalent to the highest quality rice of Thailand and double that of regular fragrant rice of Vietnam.
