Vietnam fulfills its commitment to the UNESCO Convention on Anti-Doping in Sport

Speaking at the 9th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport (COP9) held in Paris (France), the Vietnamese delegation emphasized that since joining in 2009, Vietnam has always maintained and fulfilled its commitments on implementing anti-doping programs in sports activities.

Taking place from October 25-26, 2023 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (France), the session attracted the participation of more than 100 member countries and observer organizations. Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van - Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO and representatives of the Secretariat of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO attended the session.

At the meeting, the Vietnamese delegation highly appreciated the role of the Convention for member countries and wished to continue cooperating with member countries and UNESCO in programs on capacity building and raising awareness of anti-doping in sports.

Vietnam pledges to strengthen cooperation with national, regional and global anti-doping organizations towards honest, fair, clean and doping-free sports.

In Vietnam, the Vietnam Doping and Sports Medicine Center under the General Department of Sports and Physical Training ( Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ) plays an important coordinating role in implementing anti-doping programs.

Speaking at the opening of the session, Ms. Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social Sciences and Humanities, assessed this as one of the most successful conventions in UNESCO's history with 191 countries ratifying - the second largest number of member states ratifying among UNESCO's conventions.

Ms. Gabriela Ramos emphasized that COP9 marks an important turning point in the implementation of the Convention, adapting to the continuous development of the global sports ecosystem and current challenges, contributing to the harmonization of anti-doping laws, guidelines, regulations and rules internationally to bring a fair and equal competition environment for all athletes.

Delegates highly appreciated the results of the 7th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Sports (MINEPS VII) organized by UNESCO in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2023, helping to attract investment in sports, enhancing the positive role of sports in health, society and economy.

Member countries focused on discussing efforts to improve and perfect the Convention's monitoring system, enhance the role and responsibility of the Convention in the global sports ecosystem, continue to effectively use the Anti-Doping Fund in Sport, and strengthen the capacity of small island states and least developed countries so that no one is left behind.

Delegates emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between countries in implementing the convention to promote the noble spirit of sports and promote UNESCO's mission of peace and humanistic values.
