The play "Loyal Star" honors the personality and talent of Le Khac Can

NDO - On the evening of April 26, at Hai Phong City Theater, the play "Ngoi sao trung nghia" (loyal star) was performed, part of the Hai Phong Television Stage Project directed and implemented by the Hai Phong Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The script for the play "Ngoi Sao Trung Nghia" was written by author Vu Huy Thanh, directed by People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui.

The play brings together a creative team of many famous artists: Painter, People's Artist Dat Tang; Musician, Meritorious Artist Tuan Hai; Choreographer, Meritorious Artist Hoai Anh; People's Artist Minh Thu. The entire play is performed by a collective of artists and actors from the Hai Phong Traditional Arts Theater.

The play "Ngoi sao trung nghia" shows the character, talent, and morality of Hoang Giap Le Khac Can from the time he returned home to pay respect to his ancestors to his career as an official and carrying out government affairs.

When he was an official in Xuan Truong district, he implemented a policy of benevolent politics , encouraged agriculture, and assisted the poor and sick, making the people in the area see his virtue.

While the country gradually lost its sovereignty and the nation gradually fell under French colonial rule, he devoted all his efforts to hardship, overcoming traps and temptations, and shining the light of a loyal, filial, chaste, and righteous subject.

The audience enjoyed the play.

In the history of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty, Le Khac Can was the only Hai Phong native who passed the doctorate in Chinese studies and the second-highest imperial examination. His life, background, and career were shining examples of patriotism, love for the people, integrity, and uprightness.

The career of the Royal Doctor Le Khac Can was bright in both officialdom and literature. In particular, his works all expressed patriotism, loyalty, and filial piety.

Poet Le Khac Can (1833-1870) was born in Hanh Thi village, Dai Phuong Lang commune, An Lao district, Kien Thuy prefecture, Hai Duong province (now Hanh Thi village, An Tho commune, An Lao district, Hai Phong city).

In the year of At Mao (1855), he passed the provincial examination at Nam Dinh examination school with the highest score. In the national examination in the year of Nham Tuat, the 15th year of Tu Duc's reign (1862), he continued to pass the provincial examination with the highest score. In the royal examination, he was granted the second-class Doctorate with the second-ranking title (Hoang Giap) by the king.

He was a talented writer, loved and well-treated by the king, often assigned to approve royal works and consult on how to write classical literature, a loyal and patriotic mandarin, a great cultural figure of 19th-century Vietnam.

Doctor Le Khac Can's career was brilliant in both officialdom and poetry and literature (especially with works expressing patriotism and loyalty to the king).

He held many important positions from the Hue court to the localities. No matter what position he held, Hoang Giap Le Khac Can always showed himself to be a talented and diligent person at work, trusted by the king, respected by his colleagues, and loved by the people.

The play opens with the image of Le Khac Can returning home to pay his respects to his ancestors after passing the Royal Examination - Second Class Doctorate in the year of Nham Tuat (1862), at the age of 30. Born into a poor family in Hanh Thi village, An Tho commune, he emerged from hardship, but always kept his great ambition: to study well, to use his intelligence to serve his homeland and country. The play recreates the moment when the villagers welcomed him like a shining star, symbolizing the hope and pride of his homeland.

During his career as an official, the play especially depicts the period when he held office in Xuan Truong district, where he applied the policy of favoring the people - taking the people's hearts as the foundation. He encouraged agriculture, reduced taxes, saved lives, built granaries, established schools, and encouraged the virtuous. The people of Xuan Truong remembered his merits as a source of fresh water irrigating the arid land.

His image in the Cheo play appears both strict and upright, yet kind and approachable - an ideal model of a mandarin in the hearts of the people.

Cheo plays also lead the audience through a turbulent historical period when the country gradually fell under colonial rule. Le Khac Can, regardless of fame and fortune, still maintained his loyalty and patriotism. In the emotional cheo scenes, he faced the turmoil of the royal court, the pain of losing the country, and the people's misery with a heart-wrenching feeling.

From the perspective of a scholar, he confided his feelings in poetry, hoping for the day when foreign invaders would retreat, and feeling pain when every part of the Fatherland was invaded. The excerpts from Cheo were taken from his own poems - a skillful combination of drama and literature, both profound and rich in lyricism.

The play was highly appreciated by the Jury for its artistic merit.

The end of the play is the image of the people building a temple to worship him, in memory of a loyal subject who lived up to the moral principles of a scholar: loyalty to the king, filial piety, integrity, and righteousness.

The name "Loyal Star" is a symbol, the highest honor for the son of Hai Phong - who devoted his whole life to the ideal of the country and the people.

The play “Ngoi Sao Trung Nghia” is not only a traditional work of art, but also a spiritual, cultural and historical bridge, so that today's generation can continue to learn, follow the example and preserve the shining moral values ​​that the famous Le Khac Can left behind.
