Proactively restore production, do not let land rest after crop damage

In all localities in the province, the production atmosphere is becoming more vibrant than ever. After the 2025 crop was heavily affected by storms and rains, farmers are focusing on planting winter crops, determined to regain income, ensure value and productivity per unit area, contributing to maintaining the growth rate of the agricultural sector. These days, in Truong Thi ward, people are urgently plowing the land, picking weeds, clearing canals and preparing to sow seeds. From the distant fields, the sound of plows and people talking and laughing blends into the urgent working atmosphere of the new crop.

This winter crop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen, in Nam Ninh commune, planted more than 6 sao of various crops. She shared: “Last season, due to storms No. 9, No. 10 and No. 11, rice yield decreased by more than 30%. Not wanting to let the land rest, right after the harvest, I rented a machine to cultivate the winter crops. Encouraged by the government, I expanded to more than 6 sao, including 3 sao of potatoes, hoping that this winter crop will have a 'good harvest, good price' to make up for the loss.”

Like many other households, this year Ms. Luyen chose the Marabel potato variety - a variety with good disease resistance, high yield and suitable for local soil. She plans to plant the seeds in early November, each sao needs 40-45 kg of seeds, depending on the size of the tubers. If well cared for, the yield can reach 7-8 quintals/sao. Last winter, the price of potatoes fluctuated between 11,000 and 13,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, her family earned more than 4 million VND per sao.

Also with the spirit of proactive production, Mr. Tong Viet Vinh in residential group 3, Yen Thang ward said that this year his family continues to expand the area of winter crops. As a locality with a tradition of growing crops, the local government has actively promoted and mobilized people to plant and expand the model. From the success of the previous crop with the model of melon in greenhouses, this crop, Mr. Vinh boldly invested in an additional 2,000m² of greenhouses, increasing the total area to 7,000m² to grow the Kim Hong Ngoc golden melon variety.

Thanks to the training on planting, care and harvesting techniques from the Center for Science and Technology Application, the Institute for Regional Research and Development and the Van Quyen Safe Agricultural Products Cooperative, Mr. Vinh said the production process went smoothly. His family believes that if the technical process is followed correctly, the Kim Hong Ngoc golden melon will yield high yields, have stable prices, and bring in significant income.

Linkage – Creativity – Sustainability: New Directions for Winter Agriculture

In Yen Cuong commune, comrade Nguyen Van Ru - Director of Nam Cuong Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative said that the Cooperative has instructed its members to harvest summer-autumn vegetables and prepare the land for winter planting. According to the plan, warm-loving plants are sown from the end of October, and cold-loving plants from the beginning of November. Based on the direction of the agricultural sector, the Cooperative guides farmers to increase the use of organic fertilizers, apply soil preparation techniques, prevent pests and diseases, and organize irrigation services well, providing seeds, materials, fertilizers and pesticides for production. Thanks to that, farmers are excited and confident in a successful winter crop. It is expected that by November 10, the entire winter crop area of the Cooperative will be planted, ensuring the right time frame.

Truong Thi Ward, one of the localities with the largest winter crop area in the province with more than 300 hectares, is also actively implementing the production plan. The local government has stepped up propaganda and guided farmers to plant according to the appropriate seed structure, in order to compensate for the affected output of the crop. Comrade Tran Van Quynh, Director of Bao Xuyen Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: "Since the end of October, we have opened cold storage, distributed more than 100 tons of seed potatoes for people to choose, classify, and be ready to plant when the weather is favorable."

To reassure farmers, the cooperative has also signed contracts with businesses and agricultural agents to purchase all commercial potato products. With the encouragement of the government, this year many households have registered to expand their crop area by more than 5 hectares compared to the 2024 winter crop. Currently, farmers are urgently clearing the fields, preparing the land, and preparing to plant seeds at the end of October.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in the 2025 winter crop, the whole province strives to plant about 23,000 hectares of various vegetables, including corn, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi, cabbage, spinach, potatoes and green vegetables. Of which, 25% of the area is planted on two-crop rice land. Some localities with experience in growing winter crops have built models of cooperation with businesses in production and consumption of products, aiming at safe vegetable production, circular economy and organic.

To complete the winter crop production plan, the Department of Agriculture requires communes and wards to focus on planting high-quality varieties of waxy corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and potatoes; proactively select fertile land with favorable irrigation conditions; strengthen technical guidance and promote links with businesses to build effective production and consumption chains.

At the same time, localities are actively developing safe vegetable production models according to VietGAP, organic or Japanese technology standards. Provincial irrigation companies coordinate with the government and cooperatives to regulate water, delimit irrigation zones, and support farmers in taking good care of vegetables, ensuring growth, development and high productivity. All are aiming for a common goal: turning the 2025 winter crop into a season of revival - where green fields return after storms and floods, and farmers once again affirm their enduring vitality on their homeland.
