Specifically, on January 10, the US Treasury Department announced a new round of "large-scale" sanctions against Russia. Immediately after, world oil prices rose nearly 3%, reaching a three-month high as traders worried about supply disruptions due to the expanded sanctions.
The measures target two major Russian oil producers, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, along with their subsidiaries, insurance and related shipping services.
More than 180 vessels believed to be transporting Russian oil in defiance of Western sanctions – known as the “shadow fleet” – were also added to the sanctions list.
When asked about the risk of rising gas prices, Mr. Biden emphasized: "This cannot be ruled out. There is a possibility that gas prices will increase by about 3-4 cents/gallon."
The current US President said that the sanctions are aimed at weakening Moscow's economy, making it difficult for the country to finance special military operations.
Russia has rejected the US sanctions, calling them “illegal”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country had overcome the difficulties caused by sanctions.
