Shooting in New Zealand before the opening of the 2023 Women's World Cup

The shooting took place at a construction site on one of the busiest streets in downtown Auckland, close to the 2023 Women's World Cup football matches. The incident left two people and the shooter dead and six others injured. All of the injured (including a police officer) were taken to Auckland Hospital. The shooting is causing shock in New Zealand.

Police were deployed in large numbers in the city following the incident.

According to the authorities of the co-host country of the 2023 Women's World Cup, the shooting was not related to terrorist acts. Accordingly, the 2023 Women's World Cup will still take place as planned, without any delay. The number of police officers in the city has been increased following the incident.

The opening ceremony of the 2023 Women's World Cup will begin at 5pm on July 20, New Zealand time (12pm on July 20, Vietnam time), at Eden Park. This is also the largest sports stadium in New Zealand with a capacity of 50,000 spectators.

Regarding the Vietnam women's football team, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said that the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the tournament organizing committee also pay attention to the security and safety of the players and team members during the tournament. A specialized security officer from the local police agency is assigned to closely monitor the team's activities, combined with security personnel on duty 24/7 at locations such as hotels, training grounds, etc.

Vietnam women's team is guaranteed safety to prepare for matches

With the support of FIFA and the preparation of VFF, the Vietnamese women's team is being arranged with the most favorable conditions to focus on training and preparing for important matches in Group E of the 2023 Women's World Cup with opponents being the US, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Today, July 20, the Vietnamese women's team continued to practice at Fred Taylor Park. This is a closed practice session to help coach Mai Duc Chung and his colleagues observe and make tactical decisions for the first match at the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
