Van Lang Commune, Thai Nguyen: Awakening people's strength, creating breakthroughs for sustainable development

Promoting the spirit of solidarity and the will to rise up, the Party Committee, government and people of Van Lang commune, Thai Nguyen province are focusing on implementing two strategic breakthroughs in developing community tourism and restructuring agriculture. From a land of many difficulties, Van Lang today is firmly on the journey of innovation, towards the goal of sustainable new rural areas.

Forest economy combined with livestock farming is becoming a sustainable development direction, helping many households in Van Lang commune escape poverty and become rich.

Aspiration to reach far from two breakthroughs

Van Lang commune was established on the basis of merging with Hoa Binh commune, with a natural area of ​​75.27 km2 and a population of 9,527 people. The commune party committee currently has 31 affiliated party cells with 443 party members. This is one of the communes with a large area, scattered population, mountainous terrain, high poverty rate, and inconvenient traffic infrastructure, especially in the former Van Lang commune area.

The great advantage of Van Lang is that the land fund and development space are expanded, creating a basis for exploiting the potential of agriculture and forestry. Realizing that, right from the merger, the Party Committee of the commune has identified two strategic breakthroughs as the foundation for development: first, attracting investment resources, planning stable population and building transport infrastructure, creating momentum for the development of ethnic minority areas. Second, promoting potential and advantages to support people in changing the structure of crops and livestock, applying science and technology in agricultural and forestry production, building effective and replicable models, increasing income, and sustainably reducing poverty.

It is not only an economic orientation, but also a step demonstrating the innovative thinking, daring to think and act of a young Party that dares to open its own path in a land of great potential but also many challenges.

To realize the big goals, the most important thing is to mobilize the people's strength. The Party Committee and the government of Van Lang commune have focused on consolidating the grassroots party organization, innovating leadership methods, enhancing democracy in management, and promoting the role of cadres and party members in each village and hamlet.

The grassroots Party cells have become the nucleus of solidarity, leading the emulation movement in the locality. Many skillful models of mass mobilization, the movements of "All people unite to build new rural areas, civilized urban areas", "Bright - green - clean and beautiful" have gone into depth, creating a clear change in people's awareness.

Secretary of the Van Lang Commune Party Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy said: With over 64% of the population being ethnic minorities, the Commune Party Committee has issued an action program to promote the economic strengths of forests and tea trees, while reviewing and supporting poor households in terms of production materials, applying science and technology to farming and livestock raising. Regarding infrastructure, Van Lang proposed that the province invest in a rigid bridge to replace the suspension bridge on the inter-commune route and soon complete the 3km road connecting Van Lang - Quang Chu to promote economic development.

In 2025, the commune aims for an average annual growth rate of product value of 11%, and an average income per capita of 67 million VND by 2030, 1.5 times higher than in 2025. These are meaningful numbers, clearly reflecting the aspirations of the Party Committee and people here.

Changes in every street and house

If anyone had been to Van Lang a few years ago, it would be hard to forget the slippery dirt roads and the remote villages in the middle of the forest. Now, the rural landscape has changed day by day.

The communal and inter-hamlet roads are concreted; national grid electricity, clean water for daily use reaches every household; schools and cultural houses are spacious and solid. The convenient traffic system has opened up opportunities for economic development, trade of goods and attracting tourists.

Previously, many households only relied on growing rice and corn, but now they have boldly invested in raising livestock, growing fruit trees, and developing community tourism. The change in production thinking has made a big change in the lives of people here. In the period 2020 - 2025, Hoa Binh commune reduced 7.7% of poor households (compared to the resolution target of 2%), Van Lang commune reduced by 15.49% (compared to the target of 5%). After the merger, the whole commune has only more than 300 poor households out of a total of more than 2,200 households, mainly concentrated in hamlets with a large Mong population such as Ban Ten, Lien Phuong, Tam Va, a remarkable number for a mountainous commune.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dai, Van Khanh hamlet shared: “In the past, my family was a poor household. Thanks to the State and local support in building houses, participating in training courses on forest planting and tea growing techniques, our lives have gradually stabilized and we have escaped poverty. When the hamlet launched propaganda on the targets and objectives set out in the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress, the people were very confident. Because these are realistic goals, in line with the aspirations of the people, they will certainly soon come into life, bringing practical results.”

To achieve the set goals, the Commune Party Committee directed Party cells to disseminate and propagate the results of Party Congress resolutions at all levels to all cadres, Party members and people; at the same time, based on the resolutions and the actual situation of each Party cell, to effectively lead the implementation of goals, creating changes right from the beginning of the term.

The Party Committee also emphasized the exemplary and pioneering role of cadres and party members, especially leaders, in actively implementing and spreading the spirit of innovation and creativity through specific, practical actions suitable to local conditions.

Party building work in Van Lang is identified as key. The commune Party Committee regularly pays attention to improving the quality of Party cell activities, focusing on developing new Party members, especially among the youth and ethnic minorities.

Socio-political organizations play a core role in mobilizing people to compete in economic development, maintain security and order, and build a new cultural life. Cadres and party members set an example, stay close to the people, listen to the people, and work with them to overcome difficulties. From there, people's trust in the Party and the government is increasingly strong.

The Party Committee of the commune also promotes administrative reform, publicity and transparency in policy implementation, creating favorable conditions for people and businesses to invest and produce.

Mr. Duong Van Phuc, Secretary of Van Khanh Party Cell, said: Based on the resolution of the Commune Party Committee, the Party Cell has discussed and specified tasks in accordance with the reality of the hamlet, focusing on converting crop structure, developing the economy and increasing income. Currently, the hamlet has only 1 poor household; 100% of the main roads have been concreted; the movement to protect national security has been actively responded by the people, contributing to building a peaceful and developed hamlet.

Van Lang today is wearing a new coat. The paved roads stretching between the mountains and forests, the brightly lit roofs, the lush tea and corn fields are proof of the perseverance of the people here. More than the change in appearance, it is the change in awareness and belief when people clearly see the development path of their homeland linked to the Party's resolution and their own consensus.
