Nurture a love of books
Recognizing the important role of reading, many schools are interested in building libraries and organizing practical activities to arouse and foster students' love of reading. Currently, the province has 751 libraries in 751 educational institutions at all levels. Basically, the libraries meet the requirements on the number of books and electronic learning materials, area and specialized equipment such as computers connected to the Internet, management software and staff arrangement for library work. Every year, many schools add good, diverse and attractive books suitable to the needs and psychology of students.
The Department directs schools to continue to socialize in organizing activities, donating books and learning resources to the library. Encourage students to read books, write reviews, and discuss books to maintain the habit of reading for students; help them know how to search and select suitable books to support their studies." A typical example is Cao Xa Secondary School (Tan Yen), in addition to spending money to equip good books, the school has mobilized teachers, students and parents to support books for the library and received positive responses. Up to now, the library has more than 7 thousand copies of books of all kinds such as: Children's books, science , history, skills education, stories. The library is located on the 4th floor, including a reading room for teachers, students and a book warehouse with a total area of 120 m2; the space is spacious, airy, books are neatly arranged on shelves, convenient for readers to choose. Currently, the school continues to socialize to increase the source of books for the library and build bookshelves in classrooms, reading corners in the school yard to create a friendly reading environment, attracting students.
The facilities and equipment at the library are spacious and complete, creating conditions for schools to effectively organize educational activities and develop a reading culture. 100% of primary schools organize reading and learning periods at the library. At Ngo Si Lien Primary School (Bac Giang city), every week, classes have reading periods at the library according to the timetable. Teachers guide students to read books in groups or individually, then draw pictures or retell stories they have read and reward those who do well.
Many school libraries have activity corners such as: Game corners for language development, research, and creativity. Some schools have established and maintained “Books and Action” clubs to promote daily reading activities; organize themed book festivals, give away books, display art books, and decorate friendly reading spaces.
Teacher Tran Sy Hung, Principal of Huong Son Secondary School, said: “The school cooperates with a number of libraries in and outside the province to build a “Living Book Club” so that members can regularly discuss the books they have read and share their feelings and opinions. At the same time, we organize an open library by building a book road, a reading corner in the classroom or school yard, and applying technology in electronic and digital library activities. Thanks to that, students can read books in many locations, spaces, and times. In addition to mobilizing 100% of students to participate in the “Reading Culture Ambassador” contest, the school also organizes a book review writing contest; storytelling contest, propaganda, and introduction of new books... to help students develop their skills and language. In the activities, the school invites parents to participate to build a reading habit at home.”
