“Jars here”, “Hot tofu here”, “Who wants tofu”, the cry of old lady To Thi Y (86 years old, in Ward 1, Ca Mau City) has become familiar for nearly 40 years.

Tofu seems simple, but the process of making it is elaborate and time-consuming. Mrs. Y wakes up early to grind beans to cook tofu, cook ginger syrup, make tapioca pearls, coconut milk... At around 8am, she starts pushing her cart through several streets of Ward 1 and Ward 2 to sell, and returns home in the late afternoon.

After being ground and filtered, the soybeans are boiled. According to Mr. Y, this step requires keeping the heat at medium and stirring continuously.

Her husband passed away, and Mrs. Y lived with her children, but one of them unfortunately passed away, the other who worked far away also got sick, and her youngest son who lived nearby was in difficult circumstances. So, Mrs. Y rented a house to live with her two grandchildren, one of whom was learning a trade and the other was in 7th grade.

Old man Y is small, struggling to push his cart of tofu to sell in the midday sun.

Despite the burden of making a living in old age, Ms. Y feels the warmth around her, when many people give her attention, encouragement, and sharing.

Customers buying tofu were moved and asked about Mr. Y's situation.

Tofu served with ginger syrup, tapioca pearls, mixed with coconut milk, creates a delicious dish.
