How to see the year of production of the banknote?

Article 4 of the Regulations on management of newly printed money series issued together with Decision 28/2007/QD-NHNN stipulates the principles of printing and managing series during the money printing process as follows:

1. Serial printing in the money printing process is carried out according to the following principles:

- For the types of money announced by the State Bank for issuance before 2003, the series includes the serial number and a natural number sequence of 07 printed digits from 0000001 onwards.

- For the types of money announced by the State Bank for issuance from 2003 onwards, the series consists of a serial number and a natural number sequence of 08 digits, in which the two digits adjacent to the serial number are the last two digits of the year of production of that banknote, the next 06 digits are a natural number sequence printed from 000001 onwards.

2. Serial management during the printing process of the printing factory

- The printing factory carries out bundling, packaging, and bagging according to the factory's technological process and opens a serial record book for each type of money; ensuring that the following elements are accurately and completely recorded: used serial number (including sub-numbers), type of money, year of production, and symbols of the envelope, package, and bundle of money.

In case of printing failure (discovered after the serial printing stage), a banknote with a sub-rhyme must be used as a replacement. The printing factory must organize the recording according to the factory's printing technology process.

- Documents on serial numbers and serial number books are kept at the printing factory according to the factory's printing technology process."

Based on the above regulations, with the State Bank's banknotes issued from 2003 onwards, we can know which year the banknote was produced through the two numbers adjacent to the serial number (ie the two digits after the first two letters in the banknote's serial number).

For example, if the bill serial number is CO08450876, the 08 after CO is the year the bill was produced (2008).
